Betty Adell Moffitt Hansen
1919 – 2018
Betty A. Moffitt Hansen was born September 1, 1919, in San Francisco, California to George McKenna and Ruby Simas McKenna. Betty was just a year old when her father passed away and ten years old when her mother passed. Betty, and her two sisters, June (1918), and Mary (1920) lived with their grandparents and other family members during their formative years. Betty graduated from Reno High School in 1937 and went to work for J. C. Penney Department Store.
In 1942, Betty relocated to Long Beach, California, where she worked for Southern California Gas Company. In 1946 she married Byron Moffitt and together they had two wonderful sons, David (1947) and Richard (1949). The family moved to Bountiful, Utah in1955, where they were all active in Masonic and Community groups. Betty was active in The Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron; a Past Queen of Lybia Temple No. 32 (1974), Daughter’s of the Nile; very active in PEO and the Community Church of Bountiful; as well as an active bridge player, member of Ladies Literary Club, and Volunteer at the Salt Lake City Shriner’s Hospital. During this time, Betty worked for Chevron Oil Refineries, and then the Federal Government, first for the Department of Defense and later for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. Betty and Byron had been married 29 years when he passed away unexpectedly in 1975.
In 1979, Betty married her dear friend, James Hansen and acquired a special step-daughter, Elizabeth (Buff) O’Hara. Betty and Jim made Sequim, Washington their home, living in Sunshine Acres with many other Utah friends. During their 16 years together, Betty and Jim traveled all over the world. They returned to Bountiful, Utah in 1989 and Jim passed in 1994.
Betty lived fully and actively, and very independently. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings and son Richard Moffitt. She is survived by son David A. Moffitt (Sara); Daughter-in-law Deanne Moffitt; stepdaughter Elizabeth O’Hara (CA); grandchildren Elisha (Seattle, WA), Jason (Wendee), and Jarod (Rhonda) (Salt Lake City); Michel Spruance (Peter) (Seattle, WA), Megan Morin (Gabe) (Francis, UT), Dana O’Hara and Robert O’Hara (CA): and numerous great and great-great -grandchildren – all who loved Betty well.
A brief memorial service in Betty’s honor will be held at the Bountiful Masonic Center, 143 West 1000 North, Bountiful, Utah on June 9th, 2018 at 11:30 am. Light refreshments will be served afterwards.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Shriners Hospital Salt Lake City in Betty’s name.
