Betty Rich

October 15, 1946 — September 22, 2018

Our most precious and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother most unexpectedly returned to her husband Dave and to her loving Father in Heaven, on Saturday, September 22, 2018.

Betty Carol Capener Rich was born on October 15, 1946, in Tremonton, UT to Howard Lee Capener and Lola Hunsaker.  Her given name from her parents was Carol but since she was born on her Grandmother Betty Beulah Sasser Hunsaker’s birthday, she was named Betty Carol Capener.

Betty was the 4th of 6 children to Howard and Lola Capener.  The children in birth order were, Gordon Capener, LaPriel Capener Welch, Eldon Capener, Betty Capener Rich, Lynn Capener, and Neil Capener.  She grew up in the small farming community of Riverside in northern Box Elder County, Utah.  She enjoyed playing in the hills surrounding the town and helping the family on the farm.  She always said the Capener’s were a very prominent name in the area and they were a very honest and dedicated people, being very community oriented.

While her parents were not wealthy, the family never went without and each one of the children were blessed with many talents and skills.  Betty was able to take piano lessons and became a most accomplished and talented piano player.  She had an innate ability to beautifully accompany and support many different vocalists. She also had a beautiful singing voice and very much enjoyed singing in many school and church choirs over the years.

Following her high honor graduation from Bear River High School, Betty attended Utah State University and received her bachelor’s degree with high scholastic honors. It was there at college that she met the true love of her life, David William Rich.  She first saw him walk across the stage at a church activity during her freshman year and then later went on a blind date with him.  It was then she knew he was the one for her and they were married on March 17, 1966 in the Logan Temple.  They graduated together in June of 1968 and brought 6 beautiful children to this earth:  Suzanne (Jeff) Womack, Douglas (Rochele) Rich, Rebecca (Steve) Hogan, Wendell (Michelle) Rich, Rachel (Ryan) Nichols, and Cameron Rich.  She is survived by her sister LaPriel Welch, Eldon Capener, Lynn Capener, and Neil Capener.

She dearly loved her grandchildren: Chelsie, Chloe, Lyndsay, Chaseton, Cayden, Jake, David, Cameron, Megan, Chenelle, Corbin, Tyler, Thomas, Coulson, Emily, Anna, Kurtis, William, Jace, Charlotte, Kate, Max, and Ruby; and great grandchildren as well: Navie, Blake, and Sterling.  Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gordon, and her eternal companion, David.

Betty was a very active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and having been taught at an early age the value of service, did what came natural to her.  She loved to serve and believed in honoring commitments to the greatest ability possible.  She devotedly did the very best she could in each calling and leadership position she was given.  She was Primary President and Relief Society President multiple times and served in like presidencies countless times. She was also an ordinance worker at the Bountiful Temple and revered her temple recommend as one of her most valued possessions.  She also served in Church History museum in Salt Lake City for two years and enjoyed getting to know people from different parts of the world.

Betty’s greatest love was her family and she enjoyed being with each one of them.  She fought vigorously to keep alive valued family traditions and shared her sweet testimony often.  She will be deeply missed and we love her!
