Bonnie Jean Schlotterbeck
2/2/53 ~ 4/13/09
Bonnie Jean Schlotterbeck passed away peacefully at home April 13, 2009, after a valiant and inspiring struggle with breast cancer. She was 56.
Bonnie was born February 2, 1953 in Sakabayeme, Cameroon to Florence (Wydenes) and Ralph Galloway. By any measure, Bonnie''s academic career was extraordinary in its diversity. She began with French boarding schools in Edea, Cameroon and Royan, France, followed by ninth grade in Vernon, N.J. and finishing at Schutz American High School in Alexandria, Egypt. College studies were pursued at Muskingham College, Ohio and culminated with a B.S.N. degree from the University of Washington School of Nursing. After graduation, Bonnie worked briefly at Doctor''s Hospital in Seattle before seeking greater challenges in the service of her country as a U.S. Air Force nurse. During her career she was stationed at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, RAF Upper Heyford, England, and Kirtland AFB, N.M. Following active duty, Bonnie worked as a civilian nurse at St. Luke Hospital in Boise, Idaho and the University of Utah Medical Center. Somehow, she also managed to raise three extraordinary children.
Bonnie was blessed in life with the innate ability to make friends easily. Perhaps this was due to her rich and culturally diverse background. Given ten minutes with a perfect stranger, she would know their entire history, and they hers. Such was her ability to engage and share of herself. Perhaps it was her distinctive laugh, which would put people at ease. Or perhaps it was her childlike innocence and sense of wonder that was so endearing. Bonnie''s life was dedicated to the service of others: service to her country, service to her community, and service to her family. She was a devoted wife and mother who took great pride in watching her children mature.
Bonnie is survived by her husband Glen Schlotterbeck, son Steven Schlotterbeck (23), and daughters Kristin Schlotterbeck (21), and Devon Schlotterbeck (19), all of Layton, Utah. She is also survived by her mother Florence Galloway of Rosemead, CA, sisters, Ruth Galloway of Monrovia, CA and Mary Bergman of Bellevue, WA, and brothers, Bob Galloway of Sandia Peak, NM, and Andrew Galloway of Barrie, Ontario. She was preceded in death by her father Ralph Galloway.
Bonnie''s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staffs of Hearts for Hospice, McKay-Dee Hospital, Davis Hospital, Intermountain Medical Center, and both Utah Cancer Specialists and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Your compassion is appreciated.
In keeping with Bonnie''s request, there will be no public services. Family will gather privately. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express their condolences or celebrate her life are encouraged to join the family at the Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure", May 9 in Salt Lake City. Once again, Bonnie''s team is called Bodacious Ta a" Tas, and you are welcome to join. Please consider a generous donation so that this scourge of womankind may one day be conquered.
