Bourke Dewain Tarbet IV

March 9, 1971 – July 23, 2016

“To die would be an awfully big adventure” –Peter Pan

On July 23 2016, Bourke D. Tarbet IV, beloved husband, father, papaw, son, brother, and uncle moved onto his next big adventure. Bourke passed away doing what he loved most playing in the mountains with family. Bourke suffered a heart attack while rafting in the Snake River; while this comes as a shock we are comforted that he did not suffer.

Bourke had a voracious love for life. He loved being outdoors and experiencing all that he could; camping, boating, water skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, hiking, motorcycling, downhill skiing, and traveling. Bourke loved to be surrounded by family and our definition of family extends beyond the traditional, he adored his children and grandchildren.

He was an honored veteran of 20 years that was proud to serve two tours of duty for the Army National Guard. He served in several capacities including commander for the 145th Field Artillery and along with headquarter battery among other units. He had a strong love of country and service, retiring at the rank of Major in 2009.

Bourke graduated Ogden High School and went on to attend Weber State University, gaining a Bachelor degree in Sales and Service Technology while working full time and supporting his small family.

Bourke’s bakery journey started in 1990 at the Great Harvest Bread Co. on historic 25th in Ogden, UT. A few years later Bourke and Cathy had the opportunity to become partners and later full owners of the Great Harvest Bread Co. in Layton, UT. Fast forward to 2016 and he was still a daily fixture in the bakery, in the 20 plus years hundreds of young employees looked up to him as a mentor, father figure, coach, and leader.

“Work smart, not hard”

Bourke Dewain Tarbet IV was born in Salida, CO to Shirley Ann and Bourke D. Tarbet III. The small family moved to Ogden, later adding Colton C. Tarbet. Growing up around motorcycles he developed a great love for them. He could often be found tinkering on anything with a motor. In high school he participated in JROTC and enlisted in the UTANG in ’89.

He married the love of his life Catherine Ann Platt on May 26, 1990; they have been an inseparable duo ever since. On September 30, 1990 they welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Marissa Ann Tarbet, resulting in him being wrapped around her finger forever. The following year on October 8, 1991, Bourke Dewain Tarbet V joined the small family, becoming his lifelong friend and partner in camping, riding motorcycles, and working on projects. The family enjoyed many adventures, pets and hobbies together ensuring they were a close knit family.

Bourke D. Tarbet IV is survived in death by his wife Catherine A Tarbet, daughter Marissa A. Tarbet, son Bourke D. (Jamie C.) Tarbet V, grandchildren Bourke VI and Callie, mother Shirley A. Tarbet, and brother Colton C. Tarbet, and nieces Channa and Alexia. Bourke was greeted in heaven by his father Bourke D. Tarbet III, father in-law Dennis R. Platt, and grandmother Della L. Tarbet.
