Brent Kenneth Hutchings, 77, finally shed the shackles of Lewy Body Dementia and left this world on May 26, 2024, on that final train that was only visible to him and mystery to the rest of us. While there is comfort knowing all the confusion and hallucinations will cease, he will be immensely missed by everyone who had the great privilege of knowing him.
Brent was born October 16, 1946, in Richfield, Utah, to Kenneth Giles Hutchings and Helen Jensen Hutchings. He was the second child and first boy of seven children. Brent grew up in Provo, Ut. He attended Provo schools and graduated from Provo High in 1966. He then attended Snow College and was drafted in 1966. He met his “Shatzie” Nancy, in 1968 and they were married on September 28, 1968 in the Manti Temple. They have 3 children, Candee, Clint and Teriee. They moved several times with Brent’s work and finally settled down in Farmington for the last 40 years.
Brent loved working on his parent’s small farm in Provo as well as a family lumber mill in Beaver, Utah. He would often tell stories of working alongside his grandfather, uncles, cousins and brothers in Beaver and how after a long day of hauling hay they would enjoy getting that warm homemade bread and jam that his grandmother had made and fresh milk from his grandpa’s cow. Brent learned that hard work was such an intricate part of his growing up and learning about dedication and having a strong work ethic. These ingrained qualities would go on to serve him well in his life in the military, as a bird refuge supervisor and land acquisitioner for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, and his volunteer service on Temple Square and the Bountiful Temple. He always strived to continually progress in everything he did. He obtained a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Utah State University when he was well into his 40’s. He achieved the rank of Chief Master Sargeant in the Utah Air National Guard. During his tenure as a land acquisitioner at DWR he was instrumental in purchasing wetlands that are, to this day, great environmental preserves for the State of Utah. Brent loved camping traveling and riding his motorcycle. He completed a cross country trip, by himself(!) to Palmyra New York twice as well as numerous trips with his riding group.
His last big trip was a weeklong motorcycle adventure with his grandson, Scott, going to California and back. Even in his later days, he would perk right up when he heard motorcycles driving by and vowed to get stronger so he could get back on his bike. He also loved his family and would share his pride with anyone who would listen about the achievements of his kids and grandkids.
Brent is survived by his “Shatzie”, (German for sweetheart), Nancy and his three children, Candee (James) Allred, Clint (Kristie)Hutchings and Teriee Hutchings; his siblings, Shirlee (Gary) Best, Craig Hutchings, Gwen(Tim) Willis), Kerry (Janet) Hutchings, Connie (Robert) Hayes, and Brice (Lisa) Hutchings; and six grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Judy (Craig) Hutchings.
The family would like to extend deep gratitude to Brent’s nighttime caregivers, Monique Houck and Scott, Brent’s grandson, who treated him with exceptional grace and kindness, as well as A+ Home Care who took great care of him in his last couple of weeks.
