Brooks Kaapuni Sing Luke

Brooks Kaapuni Sing Luke, 85, passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 in Uintah, UT. He was born on February 18, 1937 in Honolulu, HI to Edward Chin and Tamar Wong Luke. Brooks was the first member of his family to graduate from high school and was top of his class. He joined the Marine Corps in July 1952 and actively pursued advanced military training in his career. He retired from the Marine Corps in June of 1975, after serving in Vietnam and receiving numerous awards, including a Purple Heart.

He served as a High Priest in the Uintah 1^st Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Brooks served with quiet diligence and was an example to peers and the youth. He provided mentorship and volunteer training to the community, passing on his years of experience and training to others, including women’s self-defense. He also engaged in regular social instructions with fellow law enforcement and military, being a beacon of integrity to those he served with. Christ was found in the gentle kindness that Brooks had for those around him.

Brooks loved the wilderness, particularly the mountain and streams of the West. He collected Native American art and epitomized the spirit of rugged independence. Of particular importance were his children and grandchildren. Few were the days he was not fishing with or teaching them skills. Though not by blood, Brooks created a legacy that will be passed from generation to generation.

Brooks epitomized the happy, quiet warrior. He guided those he loved with gentle words, patience, and a sure example. His greatest talent was his ability to make the people around him better, both through teaching and example. He protected his family, community, and nation, instilling a love for all three in those around him. His spirit is now preparing a place for those who will follow, as well as rejoicing with those who came before.

Brooks is survived by his wife, Diana of Uintah; children, Loren Veril Vaupel III of Round Rock, TX; Chadwick Charles Vaupel of Mountain View, WY; and Jennifer Lee South of Layton, UT; 10 grandchildren; and sister, Tamar. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Clement, Norman, Edward, Paul, Joseph, Clarence, Harold, Samuel, Mary, and Carol. Chris Nalley of Augusta, GA, carries on the tradition of Brooks unique martial arts approach Renraku-Do.
