Bruce Passey
Bruce Passey, 81, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully Monday, December 21, 2009 with his family by his side. He was born October 8, 1928 in Lanark, Idaho to Melvin and Lula Smith Passey. Bruce was the youngest of four children and was preceded in death by his siblings, Smith, Bernice Gauer and Mirl.
Bruce attended a red, two room schoolhouse, which only had two teachers who taught first through eighth grades in Lanark, Idaho. He graduated from Fielding High School in Paris, Idaho. After graduating he served a two-year mission in the Central Pacific Mission in Hawaii. Prior to his mission he met Lynn Shepherd whom he would later marry in the Salt Lake Temple on June 9, 1952.
Bruce attended Brigham Young University and entered into the ROTC program. He graduated in 1954 with a business degree. He officially entered the Air Force on July 7, 1954 and during the 21 years of military service the family had the opportunity to live in Houston, Texas, Sacramento, California, San Antonio, Texas, Okinawa, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Manhattan, Kansas. Bruce also served one year in Vietnam as a navigator of a C-47 aircraft. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Three Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal for his combat hours of flying in Vietnam.
During Bruce and Lynn’s lifetime they had six children: Kim of Salt Lake City, UT; Bob (Wendy) of Kaysville, UT; Laura Cammack (Loring), Montpelier, ID; Tom (Janeen) of Layton, UT; Jeff (Laura) of Minneapolis, MN; Sara Call of Clearfield, UT.
Upon retirement from the Air Force Bruce and Lynn made their home in Layton, Utah for 30 years. For the past seven years they have lived in Syracuse, UT. Bruce enjoyed listening to Lynn play the piano, attending musicals, plays and grandchildren’s performances. He also loved having his nightly bowl of ice cream. He was proud of his children’s achievements and enjoyed his 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Bruce had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and served faithfully in numerous callings. He served in five bishoprics and also served as a bishop in San Antonio, Texas. He served on the High Council in Layton and as a temple ordinance worker for ten years at the Ogden temple.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Syracuse Center Ward, 1660 W. 2228 So. Friends and family may call Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Tuesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
