C Dean Holmes

OGDEN – C Dean Holmes, 85, was born in Farr West, UT on January 24, 1928 and passed away surrounded by family at the George E Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home on August 18, 2013. He grew up in the Ogden area, and married Alvina “Vi” Maser on July 3, 1948. They made their home in the Sunset and Roy areas and had four children together. In his younger years Dean served as a seaman in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Piedmont in the World War II Victory American Area Campaign. Dean also loved to bowl and participated in leagues for more than 20 years. He began his railroad career working for OUR&D, and then worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in various positions, including car foreman, the derailment wrecking crew foreman, and was Riverdale yard foreman, often taking on extra shifts, until he retired in 1990 with 38 years of service. Dean loved to spend time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed his beautiful rose garden, especially his “Dolly Parton” bush. All who knew him will miss him very much. Special thanks to his son Rob and his daughter-in-law Sandy for their patience in taking such good care of dad for the last few years as his health declined. Dean is survived by his children; Larry (Sherrie) Holmes of Riverdale, Rob (Sandy) Holmes of Roy, Karen (Doug) Groberg of Farr West, and Diana (Mike) Whiting of Clearfield; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild, and one on the way; his sister Elsie (Newton) Jackson of Georgia, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Vi Holmes; father Robert Holmes, mother Alta Anderson Holmes; father-in-law Alexander Maser, mother-in-law Lydia Hehr Maser, one brother, four sisters, three brother-in-laws, one sister-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved pets Brandy and Peewee. A Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Riverdale Second Ward Church, 5500 South 1175 West, Riverdale, Utah. Friends may gather and visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
