Calvin Reid Bybee

February 19, 1926 ~ September 21, 2021

Our kind, loving hero, Calvin “Reid” Bybee, passed away peacefully in his home on September 21, 2021. He was born February 19, 1926 to Joseph Orin and May Lawson Grix Bybee. He married Lora Gaye Carver on December 10, 1954 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Reid grew up in Uintah and lived happily there for 95 years. He graduated from Weber High School in 1944. He served in the US Navy in World War II straight out of high school and in the Army Reserves after graduating from Utah State Agricultural College’s ROTC. Following his military service, he attended Weber State where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts. Reid then obtained a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Utah State College.

Reid worked in the Weber County School District for 34 years where he served as an industrial arts teacher and an elementary school principal. He tried to help each student feel important by knowing each of their names and taking an interest in their lives. Many teachers and students have mentioned how much dad had influenced their lives. Additionally, Reid was active in the community. He served on the Uintah Town Council for 20 years and served in many church callings.

Reid’s favorite pastimes focused on athletics and family. He played baseball and basketball and he LOVED coaching his children during their little league and young adult years. His coaching style emphasized fundamentals, teamwork, self-confidence, patience, respect, and enjoyment of the game. He was an avid reader and took great pride in his garden and yard.

Dad is also known for his sense of humor, some said it was dry, but we call it “priceless”.  His smile and baby blue eyes lit up a room and every life he touched was blessed for knowing him. He had the ability to make everyone feel important and needed. Reid was a very patient man and taught life lessons through example and gentle guidance. He dedicated his life to teaching children – his own and others.

Reid is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lora Gaye and his children: Laurie Bybee, LeAnne Maycock, Bradley (Rebecca) Bybee, Kevin (Laura) Bybee, Kelly (Jennifer) Bybee, Chris (Tiffanie) Bybee, Jennifer (Troy) Miller; 24 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers: Joe, Grant, Bob, Wayne, and Jesse; four sisters: Ina, Lois, Rosalie and Ruth; grandson, Cameron Bybee; and daughter in-law, Tiffanie Bybee.

A special thanks to Theresa and Jennifer at Envision Hospice for their loving care.
