Carl Christian DeYoung
January 4, 1924 ~ August 22, 2016
On August 22, 2016, our loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Carl Christian DeYoung peacefully passed away at the age of 92. Carl was born on January 4, 1924 in Ogden, Utah, a son of Frank and Maria Van Rugge DeYoung. He married Thora June Morrison, whom he dearly loved, on September 3, 1947 in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple. She passed away in January 2000.
After graduating from Ogden High School, he attended Weber State College and University of Idaho. He was commissioned an Ensign at Cornell University and served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah, majoring in Mathematics, with minors in Physics and Chemistry, and a Masters degree from Utah State University in Educational Administration and Counseling. He continued his education at various universities including Stanford. He worked for Weber County Schools for thirty-eight years, eight as a teacher and counselor and thirty as principal at Valley School, South Ogden Junior High, North Ogden Junior High, with the last eleven years at Bonneville High School.
Carl was elected president of the Weber Education Association and to the Board of Trustees of the Utah Education Association. He also served as Vice President of the UEA and ten years on the board of the Utah High School Activities Association.
He enjoyed music and sang for many years in the Ogden Tabernacle Choir and the Ogden Oratorio Society where he served as Personnel Manager. He sang in the dedicatory choirs for the Ogden Tabernacle and Ogden Temple. Carl was an active member of the South Ogden 3rd Ward (formerly the 38th Ward) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as Bishop of the 38th Ward, South Ogden Stake High Councilor, Gospel Doctrine Teacher, and various other callings. He and June served a mission to the Netherlands. Following their mission, they were called as Ordinance Workers in the Ogden Temple. He enjoyed doing research in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, searching the original records from the Netherlands of the sixteen and seventeen hundreds. He loved his wife and family, and enjoyed with them their achievements and experiences. He appreciated the opportunities and blessings that came as a result of his family, church callings, profession, and music.
Carl is survived by his five children, Morgan DeYoung (Terri) Wyeth, Rio Vista, CA; Chris (Clyde) Baker, Austin, TX; Pat (Lester) Turner, Layton; David (Jana) DeYoung, Riverdale; and Michael (Susan) DeYoung, Ogden. He is also survived by his sister, Cora (Robert) Moore; 24 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, June; brother, Harold; and sister, Marie.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 26, 2016 at 1 p.m. at the South Ogden 3rd Ward Chapel, 4075 Orchard Ave. Friends may visit with family on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
Carl would like to thank Dr. Jeffrey Call, Mountain Ridge Assisted Living, Ben, Encompass Home Health, Wendy, Ken and Ann for their friendship and fine service. The family would also like to thank the caring staff at McKay Dee Hospital.
