Ogden – Carl Victor Fernelius, age 90, passed away unexpectedly on January 1, 2014.

Carl was born on September 6, 1923 in South Weber to Victor C. and Thea Rustad Fernelius. He graduated from Davis High School in 1941. He served as a member of the military police during World War II, guarding Italian and German prisoners of war. While working as a guard at Hill Air Force Base, he met his wife Lorna Dawson. They were married on August 20, 1946; their vows were solemnized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple in March of 1951. She passed away in October 2003.

He attended Weber State College and later operated a dairy farm in South Weber. While serving as office manager at Ideal Rock Products, he returned to Weber State College to finish his degree. He attended night school for ten years and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1969, the same year as his eldest daughter. After graduation, he worked at the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in August, 1988.

Carl was always a great reader and kept a long term list of books he’d read; his vegetable and flower gardens were the envy of his neighborhood. Carl loved sports, particularly baseball and golf; he played them when he was younger and watched them on television until the end. Trips to Europe and Hawaii were two of the highlights of his life. Active in the LDS Church, he served in the Sunday School and as a teacher in the priesthood quorums for nearly 50 years. He was ward/stake finance clerk for fifteen years.

Carl is survived by his children, Carol (Howard) Stetser of Fort Collins, Colorado; Terry (Paul) Kriekard of Uintah Highlands; Mark (Kristine) Fernelius of South Weber and Nancy (David) Herbert of Washington Terrace; 13 grandchildren, Jamie, Jennifer, Jim, Amy, Marcie, Pete, Megan, Tim, Tom, Mike, Jared, Scott and Tony; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Barbara and Becky.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 6, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Uintah Cemetery.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at the George E. Wahlen Veteran’s Home of Ogden where Carl lived the last 3 ½ years of his life.
