WASHINGTON TERRACE-Carl Clawson Maughan, one of the many called "The Greatest Generation", passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at the age of 90. He is now free from pain and is able to hear and see.

Carl was born a cold winter day, February 9, 1920, in Wellsville, Utah, the oldest son of Irvine Salisbury and Hilda Caroline Clawson Maughan.

Carl was a man who loved his country and fought for its freedom during World War II, serving for four years with the U.S. Army Air Force, where he was sent to every continent in the world. He never wanted to talk about the horrors of war, or what he saw. He was just grateful to his Heavenly Father that he came home safe.

He learned the ethics of hard work and attended school in Hyrum and Wellsville, where he excelled in all sports. While in high school, Carl won the Pentathlon Games as the outstanding athlete in all sports in the Northern part of Utah. He loved sports and was known as the "Fast Pitch" in baseball. While in the service, Hank Greenberg, who was in the same company as Carl, and a "Hall of Famer", told Carl he had the best pitching arm he had ever seen.

Following the war, Carl moved to Ogden working for American Food Stores as Assistant Manager, then to Meadow Gold Dairy where he won many awards for his salesmanship. He retired from DDO after 24 years of service.

Carl married Merle Taylor on February 2, 1946 and she later preceded him in death. On May 19, 1961, he married Connie Beckstead in the Logan LDS Temple for time and eternity.

Carl was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in many capacities including Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, Ward Finance Clerk to two Bishops, Sunday School Teacher, Stake YM Presidency, Stake Athletic Director, Home Teacher and Temple Ordinance worker. He and his wife Connie spent many hours doing temple work.

Surviving are his wife Connie of Washington Terrace; two daughters, Marillyn Elphick, Layton; Dixie Burrell, Washington Terrace; five grandchildren, Stephanie, Brian, Jason, Brook and Sarah; and seven great-grandchildren, Kallie, Kourtney, Alyssa, Christy, Kaden, Hannah, Leah and Austin.

He is also survived by three sisters, Radia, Rhea and June, and a brother, Lynn.

His first wife, an 18-month-old son Bryce, his parents, and two brothers, Clark and Wayne, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.

Family will visit with friends at the mortuary on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Interment, Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., where Military Honors will be accorded.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the LDS Missionary Fund.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Stephen Thomson that worked so hard on Carl for many years; also Dr. Glen Biddulph of Advocate Hospice, especially Holly, Lindsey, Mike, LaDawn, Stacey, Debbie, Kent, Iva and Daniel for their Christ-like service.
