Carlton D. Staley

Carlton D. Staley KAYSVILLE – Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Carlton D. Staley, age 92, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2007. He was born June 2, 1915 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Evelyn Pearl Deal and Oliver Scott Staley. He married his church sweetheart, Betty Louise Wolf on July 26, 1942. Together they became parents of two sons and five devoted grandchildren. Carlton and Betty made their home in Colton, California and later in Kaysville, Utah. Carlton was proud of recently becoming a great-grandpa. At an early age, Carlton moved with his family from Iowa to Colton, California. He attended high school there where he participated in music, debate, and football. He later attended the University of Dubuque (Iowa) with a musical ministry scholarship from the Presbyterian Church. He had a beautiful tenor voice that delighted many and had the opportunity to sing with the San Bernardino Valley chorus in a Hollywood Bowl concert and with his university choir in Carnegie Hall. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and served as assistant organist, choir member, and on the Board of Deacons and the Board of Ruling Elders. He enlisted in the Army Signal Corps in 1942 and was trained as a radar repairman. He was deployed to the Asiatic Pacific Theater in 1944 attached to an Air Force anti-aircraft battery in New Guinea. He returned home in 1946. His interest in communications and electronics continued as a civilian. He worked at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California as a radar repair shop foreman. In 1965, he accepted a position at Hill Air Force Base as an equipment specialist in management for the Titan missile guidance system. When he retired in 1974, he went to work for several years as an “antique repair and refinishing technician” for his wife Betty, who owned and operated The Salt Box Antiques store in Roy. Carlton loved woodworking and took pride in beautifying his yard and home. His family will forever miss seeing him working with a piece of wood, playing the piano or organ, and having fun with his family. Most especially, we will miss his wit, charm, and sense of humor. What a wonderful, Christ-like man he was, with a tender heart filled with love and compassion for others. We take comfort in knowing he is now with his beloved Betty, who he has deeply missed for three years. Carlton is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Gerald and Scott, and one sister, Peggy. He is survived by his brother Richard Staley of San Diego, his two sons, Robert C. Staley (Christine) of Pasadena, California; and Donald T. Staley (Leisha) of Kaysville, Utah; grandchildren Steven (Heather), Sherrie, Jason, Karen, and Jessica, and one great-grandson, Jackson. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 23, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Fruit Heights Westminster Presbyterian Church, 79 S. Mountain Road. Family and friends may call Monday from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. at the church. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery. Funeral directors, Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
