Carolyn Peterson Luke, age 87, passed away on August 16, 2024, her 66th wedding anniversary, with her loving family by her side. She was known for her sweet and gentle personality.
Carolyn was born on March 22, 1937, in Price, Utah, to Orson W. and Barbara Reid Peterson. Two beautiful sisters, Judith and Janet, completed their family 9 and 11 years later. In her youth Carolyn had many responsibilities assisting her family which helped her develop a strong work ethic, independence, a sense of adventure, and the ability to have gentle compassion for others. Carolyn spent summers living and working with her grandparents at the Wyoming State Mental Hospital and winters selling tickets at her hometown movie theater, all while earning high grades and being the South Emery High School class secretary.
A magnificent union began when Carolyn and Joe O. Luke were married on August 16, 1958. Later sealed with their children in the Salt Lake Temple on December 14, 1966. Their greatest achievement in life was raising their children, John, Jolene, and Janice.
Upon graduation from Brigham Young University with a degree in elementary education, Carolyn was a dedicated teacher for over 30 years where she touched the lives of countless children.
One of the highlights of her life was when they lived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for 2 years. Caroyln taught at the American Community School while Joe established a vocational program at Haile Selassie University. As a family they were able to experience vast cultures and travel to many incredible destinations throughout Africa, Europe, Egypt, and Israel. Joe and Carolyn continued their love of travel throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Tahiti.
Carolyn had many talents. She loved to read, play the piano and saxophone, sew, and surprise her family with creative recipes she prepared. She found joy in serving others from her primary children and others in her church callings to volunteering at the Salt Lake City International Airport and Huntsman Cancer Institute. Carolyn loved to find the perfect gift to say she loved you. Her desire to love and serve others was demonstrated through countless acts of love and service as she constantly thought of ways to bring joy to others; a legacy that now lives on through her family, which currently includes 8 grandchildren and their spouses, and 21 great grandchildren.
Carolyn is survived by her husband Joe, children John (Kathy) Luke, Jolene ( David) Christiansen, Janice (Allen) Brockbank, grandchildren and spouses, great grandchildren, sister and brothers-in-law, Judith and Perry Olson, Jerry Willey. Preceded in death by her parents and sister Janet Willey.
The family would like to acknowledge the enormous amount of love and care shown by the staff of Inspiration Hospice and Barton Creek throughout her decline with Alzheimer’s and degenerative disc disease. Karlee, Cheona, Regan, Camille, Laura, Braden, Valorie, and numerous aids; she loved you and was grateful for your compassionate care, as are we. Thank you.
