Catherine Alex

Catherine “Cathy” “Katie” Chipian Alex, 85, returned home to our Lord on February 26, 2016.

Cathy was born September 20, 1930 to Anast J and Effie Kokotas Chipian in Bingham Canyon, Utah. From an early age, she cultivated many lifelong friendships. After graduating from Bingham High, she attended USU, majoring in Elementary Education. Being the “social butterfly” that she was, it is no surprise that she was the president of her sorority, Kappa Sigma. After graduating in 1952, she began teaching at South Clearfield Elementary. Over the next 28 years, she taught 2nd & 3rd grades at Crestview, then Lincoln Elementary, where she was loved by all her students.

On June 14, 1953, she married Peter Alex. Together, they served The Lord and the community of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Ogden, Utah. She was an active member of the Philoptochos Society and was constantly giving of herself. Later in life, while living in Anacortes, Washington, they served the community of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Bellingham, Washington.

Cathy was an inspiration and many people sought her guidance. She was a devout wife, mother, Yiayia, Great-Yiayia, sister, Thea, Nouna, and friend. She was loved and will be missed by many.

Cathy is preceded in death by her loving husband Peter, her parents, and her sisters, Aspasia “Espie” Forbus, Helen “Kelly” Daughtery, & Virginia Oneida. She is survived by her children Jamie (Bob) Bateman and Matthew, grandchildren Anna (Billy) Rogers, Rachel (Ryan) Gurney, Desireé (Jeff) Cherye, Matthew, & Samantha, and many great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings John (Angie) Chipian and Mary Burton, along with many nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
