Catherine Elizabeth Hubbell

Catherine Elizabeth Hubbell passed away on August 30, 2013 at Legacy Village of Layton. She was almost 99 years old. She was the first child born in the United States to immigrant parents, Esteban & Encarnacion Blanco who came from Mecina Bombaron, Granada, Spain. Catherine was born and raised in Hayward, California with her eight siblings. Everyone in the family worked and Catherine told us that at 16 they were all expected to quit school and go to work in the Pickle Factory, but she convinced her parents to allow the 2 younger ones to finish high school. When the Pickle Factory workers went on strike in the late 1930''s, her father would not allow her to cross the picket line, so a friend talked her into going to beauty school. She worked as a beautician for many years after that.

In 1942 she married a Marine, Hillis Franklin Hubbell. They had 3 children, Donald Hubbell (wife Maxine) from Lewiston, ID, Carol Ouellette (husband John) from Fruit Heights, UT, and Sharon Hubbell (husband Tom Woodgerd) from Helena, MT. She spent most of her early married life in Nebraska and then made numerous moves to Colorado, Montana, Nevada and Utah. She loved to garden, collect dolls, do word search puzzles and play BINGOa€"she was the "BINGO Queen" of Legacy Village. Catherine worked hard throughout her life and she valued and stressed education with her children. She was a great role model for her 3 children, 4 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

Thanks Moma€"you will be missed.

The family would like to thank Caregivers Support Home Health & Hospice and Legacy Village of Layton for making Catherine''s last year''s more comfortable and enjoyable, especially the activity director at Legacy who always had fun things to do. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Fairfield, Nebraska.

Services entrusted to Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
