Cecil LeRoy Hough
August 28, 1922 – February 3, 2017
On the evening of February 3, 2017, Cecil “Cec” LeRoy Hough passed away at his home from natural causes. Cecil was born on August 28, 1922 in Faith, South Dakota to Roy and Rose (Pettit) Hough. He was preceded in death by his daughter Connie Hough, and his wife of 67 years, Thora Smith Hough. He was survived by daughters Janet (husband Tracy Foster); Rachelle Jeppson (husband Joshua); and sons James (wife Linda) and Richard (wife Debora). He had six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Cecil was very well liked in the community having worked with boy scouts and being a long time member of the Kaysville Rotary club (twice president). He loved the outdoors and enjoyed sailing, camping, fishing, and golf. He was also an avid Utah Jazz basketball fan. He a had a love of flying in his younger years and was an early member and officer in the Civil Air Patrol. Cecil was very proud of his family and was happiest on special occasions surrounded by his children, grandchildren and his beautiful great-grandchildren.
As a young man, Cecil worked a variety of jobs including: fruit picker, farm hand, and even a short stint selling concessions at a circus. At one time Cecil joined the CCC and built dams, roads, and housing. Like many others during the depression years, he often hitchhiked, or hopped a freight train in search of work. When WWII started, Cecil signed up with the Navy and served in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska (among other places) as a radio operator. He was on leave in Seattle when the war ended, and served in Port Angeles, San Diego, and Portland, where he was mustered out.
After his discharge from the Navy, he trained as an air traffic controller and was assigned to Arlington, Oregon. It was here he bought a used 1936 Harley-Davidson 74 motorcycle that he rode across the northwest to his grandparent’s home in Vancouver,Washington. He was reassigned to Pocatello, ID where he met his wife Thora Smith. They were married on March 23, 1949. He later moved to Utah, working at the Ogden tower and then Hill AFB until his retirement. Cecil attended Weber State College and Salt Lake Community College after retirement and received his Associate Degree. He opened C&S Small Engine repair in Kaysville until his real retirement.
The family would like to thank all of the friends, neighbors, and LDS church members who loved and looked after our mother and father. We would especially like to thank his caregivers Joyce, Mindi, and Leanna for the tender care that made it possible for Cecil to remain in his own home.
Friends may visit with family on Thursday February 9, 2017 from 12:30-1:30 at Lindquist's Kaysville Mortuary, 400 No. Main in Kaysville. A short burial service will take place at the Kaysville Cemetery, 500 East Crestwood Road
