On May 7, 2024, Charles Roy Cochran, 82, a longtime resident of Roy, Utah, passed away peacefully at his home where he wanted to be, with his sweetheart by his side. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother. We will miss his sense of humor. He brought such joy and laughter to his family and all his friends within the deaf community.
Roy was born July 1, 1941, in Heber City, Utah to Charles Marshall and Loraine Jorgensen Cochran. His parents soon discovered that Roy was deaf. He was sent to the deaf school in Ogden, Utah at the age of six. He graduated in 1961 with honors, and as Valedictorian he participated in many school activities, including basketball. As a star player, he also received his Duty to God award in the Boy Scouts.
Roy began his career as a printer by learning linotype setting in school. Over the years he saw lots of changes in this field, spanning from the linotype machine to computers. He had many learning opportunities and attended out-of-state training to keep up with the ongoing changes. He worked for the Salt Lake Tribune and put in 43 years at the Ogden Standard Examiner prior to retiring from there.
Roy married his lifetime sweetheart, Darlene Stewart on April 19, 1963, in the Logan Utah Temple. They grew up together at the deaf school, developing a friendship that turned into what Roy lovingly called ‘puppy love.’ They recently celebrated a quiet and loving 61 st wedding anniversary at home.
Roy was very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having twice served as Branch President. Roy and Darlene served a mission together for the family history library, served as zone leaders, and as temple workers at the Salt Lake, Bountiful, and Ogden Temples. Roy had a strong testimony, embracing the gospel of Jesus Christ and Joseph Smith as a true prophet of God. He loves our Savior, Jesus Christ and enjoyed studying the Holy Scriptures.
Roy’s family includes his wife, Darlene Cochran, Roy; children, Darwin (Wendy) Cochran, Syracuse; Sandra (Jeff) Harrington, Idaho Falls, ID; Donald (Tiffany) Cochran, Riverside, CA; Lisa Cochran (Toby Daniels), Austin, TX; siblings, Jim (Linda) Cochran, Vineyard, sister-in-law, Dixie Cochran, Cheyenne, WY; Charlotte (Abe) Cochran, and Alan (Holley) Cochran, all of St. George; twelve grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Kent.
