Charles Albert Combe 1921 a" 2009
OGDEN a" Charles "Chuck" Combe, 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 surrounded by family.
He was born November 4, 1921 in Uintah, Utah the son of John and Mary Long Combe. Chuck grew up in Uintah and graduated from Weber High School. He received an Associate''s Degree from Weber College and his Bachelor''s and Master''s from the University of Utah. He loved sports, especially baseball. He pitched for the U of U baseball team in the 1940''s and had been a loyal Ute ever since. He also pitched for a minor league team in West Palm Beach, Florida. He faithfully attended U of U basketball and football games and received super fan recognition a few years ago. He was also a loyal member of the Old Time Athletes Association.
He fought in the European Theater during WWII where he served with the 425th Night Fighter Squadron and developed many lifelong friends.
Chuck married Phyllis Bussell on September 2, 1946, his sweetheart for 63 years. They were active members of the First United Methodist Church in Ogden. They have many memories of visiting his relatives in Italy and her family in Nebraska; attending U of U sporting events; and of being with family.
Chuck was a teacher and an administrator for the Ogden City School District. Known by many as "Coach Combe", he led the baseball and basketball teams at Central Junior High for 10 years. He was promoted to assistant principal at Highland Junior High and later principal at Gramercy and Lewis Elementary. He loved the kids and his colleagues.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Combe, one daughter, Charlene Combe Smith, and two sons, Arnold (Cheryl) Combe and John (Laura) Combe, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Combe; brothers, Frank and Lyman Combe; and sister, Lydia Combe Cottle.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 23 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
Friends may call at the mortuary on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.
Interment, Uintah Cemetery, where Military Honors will be accorded.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Organ Fund, (1339 West 400 North, Marriott-Slaterville, Utah) or to the charity of your choice.
