Charles Munroe Engberg A Gentle Man
OGDEN - Charles Munroe Engberg passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2008, just 12 days short of his 85th birthday.
He was born May 28, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Andrew Ferdinand Engberg and Helen Florence Munroe. He spent most of his childhood in Grantsville.
His early life was heavily influenced by the Great Depression and World War II. Charles was proud of his service to America, having served in the US Army under the command of General George S. Patton. During the war, he fought in four major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge.
In 1946, after returning from the war, Charles married Evelyn J. Murphy, whom he met while attending USU. She was his partner in life until she passed away in 1999. He liked to say that she brought order, purpose, beauty, and love into his life.
Charles graduated from USU in 1948 and began a 38 year teaching career in Idaho and Utah. He also continued to serve his country in the National Guard and Army Reserve for over 30 years, retiring with the rank of Major.
He loved gardening and was an avid reader of history and current events. He maintained his special sense of humor to the end. His family treasures our lively conversations with him, the strong values, and sense of humor he passed along to us.
Charles is survived by his children, Julie, Karen, Greg and Kristine, and by his son-in-law, John Naser. Also surviving are five grandchildren.
There will be a visitation for friends and family on Wednesday, May 21st from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., followed by a private family graveside service on Thursday.
To those who wish to make a donation in Charles'' memory, he would be pleased if the donation went to the SPCA or to any Disabled Veterans charity.
"Atque in perpetuum, Grandpa, ave, ave atque vale." (And for eternity, Grandpa, hail and farewell."
