Charles Douglas Sleeman Jr.

Charles Douglas Sleeman, Jr., 91 years old, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2024, at his home in Syracuse, Utah. He was born on May 14, 1933, in Rochester, New York to Charles Douglas Sleeman and Mary Alice Turpin Sleeman. He was the 7th child in a family of 10 children.

He was reared and educated in East Rochester, New York and entered the United States Air Force where he served as a medic in the Korean War. Upon his return from Korea, he was stationed at Hill Air Force Base in northern Utah. As a medic there, he met a red headed young widow, Betty Beazer Ewing, from Syracuse, Utah. They were married on May 22, 1954, in Brigham City. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Betty passed away in 2002. He married Gwen Nuttal, and she passed away after five years together. He married Karlene Nelson and was later divorced.

He held various jobs from Steve’s Marine, R.C. Willey, as a cab driver, and as a truck driver to support his family. He retired after driving a milk tanker for many years. He worked during his retirement as a wood worker and furniture maker with his brother-in-law.

He attended Weber State University and graduated from the diesel mechanic’s program.

Doug was awarded the Korean Ambassador of Peace medal from the Korean Government for his service to the Korean people during the war, and in 2015 he was privileged to go to Washington, D.C. with the Honor Flight, accompanied by his grandson, Braxton Sleeman.

He loved camping, Pepsi, water skiing, Pepsi, working alongside Betty in the scouting program, Pepsi, acting as Betty’s sou chef as she did Dutch oven cooking, Pepsi, and mostly his family. After Gwen’s death he served as a missionary at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, seven of his siblings and his wives Betty and Gwen. 

He is survived by his children, Mary (Bob) Blackett, Gordon (Joan) Sleeman, Lisa (Mark) Scadden, Kelly (Feama) Sleeman, Dixie Sleeman, and Scott Sleeman. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, two great, great-grandchildren, his sisters, Vivian Falcone and Nancy Barnett, sister-in-law, Judy Sleeman, and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, December 20, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Syracuse City Cemetery 1250 South 1000 West, Syracuse UT, where military honors will be accorded. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. at Lindquist’s Syracuse Mortuary, 869 South 2000 West, Syracuse UT.
