Charles Tsuneo Tsukamoto

Charles Tsuneo Tsukamoto, age 96, passed away in his sleep on Saturday, February 23, 2013. He was the second child of five, born to Tsunekichi and Saki Tsukamoto, on December 4, 1916, in Ogden, Utah.

He attended Ogden City Schools, graduating from the old Ogden High School in 1933.

Charles was drafted into the US Army and became a medic and served during WWII in Okinawa. He was part of the 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team. When he was discharged, he came home to Ogden and worked on the farm with his family. When the Korean War broke out, Charlie was called up to serve again, as a medic.

He married Frances Fumiko Endo on February 16, 1952 at the Ogden Japanese Christian Church. Together they worked side by side at Tsukamoto''s Produce, their family business. People came from as far away as Salt Lake to satisfy their cravings for the sweetest corn, tomatoes, and many other vegetables.

Charles was a lifelong member of the Ogden Japanese Christian Church.

He was an avid Jazz fan, never missing a game, even if it meant staying up all night. He loved watching all sports. He excelled in woodworking making desks, bookcases, chairs and tables. He loved to fish and even caught a 350 pound Blue Marlin in Cabo, Mexico. He also was an excellent cook, mastering the art of sushi making before it was popular, providing demonstrations to the public.

Charles is survived by his daughters, Karen and Tom Gammiere of San Diego, California; Lori and Michael Mitchell of Downers Grove, Illinois; four grandchildren, Ty, Zac, Reilly and Casey; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sisters, Jean Teruko Tsukamoto, Eiko Sato, and Miyo Yamashita, and brother, Jiro Tsukamoto.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.
