Charley Alton Jones
August 17, 1936 ~ July 17, 2016
Charley Alton Jones was born to Charley S.E and Fay Jones (Gerdes) on August 17, 1936 in Riverside, California and died at his home in West Haven on July 17, 2016.
Charley was an honorable patriot and proud veteran. He joined the U.S. Air Force at age 17 and served for the next 21 years to include four combat tours – one in Korea and three in Vietnam. He continued to serve into his seventies as a volunteer at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veteran’s Home and the Hill Aerospace Museum.
On July 18, 1971, Charley and Jolene each married the love of their lives. They cherished each other for the next 45 years. Together they raised three good sons and one sweet daughter. He was a wonderful father and could have not been a more attentive and loving husband.
Charley had a tender soul. We called him the candy man. He always left the house with pockets full and returned empty handed. He loved bringing smiles with peppermint candy to everyone from his grandchildren to the gate guards at Hill Field.
Charley liked John Wayne, but, above all, he loved us. He had a reserved nature but somehow made each one of us feel uniquely special. He was proud of us and we were proud of him. He was a good man and lived a good life. We will miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Martin “Mike” Gerdes, and his daughter Charlene Lloyd who was the apple of his eye.
He is survived by his loving wife Jolene Jones of West Haven; his children Mike Jones of Roy; Scott and Melissa Roundy of North Ogden; Mark and Becky Roundy of West Haven; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, and his siblings Melva Archer, Carol Jones, Marvin “Butch” Jones, Nelda Gerdes and Edward Gerdes.
The family would like to express our unconditional gratitude to the Emergency Department at McKay Dee Hospital Center for their compassionate care of our loved one and the kindness showed to our family.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2016 at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South. The family will meet with friends prior to the service from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.
