Christiane Lee Straight-Bybee passed away in her sleep on July 11, 2024, at home. Christy was born on October 29, 1973, at Lakenheath AFB to JoJean Anderson and Steven Straight. She married her husband, Daniel Bybee, for the first time in Las Vegas in 2005, and remarried in May of 2017.
Christy had an MBA in Human Resources as well as degrees in Small Business Management and Graphic Design. She liked to travel and visited Europe; her favorite place was Italy, where she enjoyed the food and culture. She lived in several places, including her hometown of Houghton Lake, Michigan, Leavenworth, Kansas, Augusta, Georgia, Paris, Tennessee, and most recently, Layton, Utah.
Christy was passionate about her career in Human Resources and tried to help people whenever she could. She also spent many years as a restaurant manager and in other service roles. Christy loved to create things and make people laugh. She enjoyed animals, photography, painting, gaming, reading, music, and exploring nature.
One of her best friends, Paula, was so much like family that she would often walk into their home unannounced and take food from the fridge while stealing the love of Christy's dog, Bubba, before greeting Christy, who was often gaming on her computer.
One of Christy’s favorite stories to tell was about her father, Dave Riedel. He was often late to things and would joke that he’d be late to his own funeral. When he passed away, his grandson, Kaleb, asked Christy if she wanted to put his urn in her car, to which she had to tell him that they couldn’t because he wasn’t in it yet; he had, in fact, been late. This story always made her smile fondly while thinking of her dad.
She was a devoted wife and mother. Family was everything to her, and she proved it every day, from the big things like celebrating birthdays and graduations to the small things such as a simple call or message to check in and see how everyone was doing. She was kind and had an amazing sense of humor, never one to hesitate to make someone laugh or smile. Her day was made brighter just by helping others.
She was an amazingly supportive mother and always believed that her daughter, Taylor, was her whole world. She was always happy and smiling whenever she spent time with her daughter. She had been there for her daughter through everything, from the struggles of Taylor’s teenage years to the responsibilities of adulthood. Taylor’s hobbies in gaming and music were strongly influenced by her mother.
A story that always brought smiles to Christy, Daniel, and Taylor was the chipmunk that had made a nest in their sofa when they lived in Houghton Lake. The chipmunk was extremely clever and was always able to elude any of the traps they set for it. One early morning, there were noises coming from the front porch. Thinking Taylor had come home from her grandparents’ house early, Christy stuck her head out the front door and realized the noises were coming from the trash can. The chipmunk had gotten into the garbage after some expired monkey bread. Christy quickly pulled the bag shut and slammed the lid down on the trash can. She then ran back into the house, shouting at her husband, “I caught the little stinker! I caught him!” This memory never failed to get a smile and a laugh out of Christy and anyone else who heard the tale.
Christy is survived by her mother, Jody Riedel; her husband, Daniel Bybee; her daughter, Taylor Straight; her sister, Kelly Straight; and her brother, Kenny Straight. She is preceded in death by her father, Steven Straight, and stepfather, David Riedel. In lieu of flowers, please provide donations to the Trevor Project.
