Clarence Hyrum Painter
May 4, 1931 ~ June 21, 2016
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Clarence Hyrum Painter, 85, passed away with his family at his side late Tuesday.
He was born to Francis James and Leona Caldwell Painter on May 4, 1931 in Ogden UT. He grew up on their family farm in Farr West.
After graduating from Weber High School he enlisted in the US Army in 1952 during the Korean War serving as a communication director for the 56th Battalion, along with many other duties that led to a recommendation for him to attend West Point Academy. Instead, he married his sweetheart Rita C. Checketts on January 29, 1955 in Las Vegas Nevada. They were later sealed in the Ogden LDS Temple. This year they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
He was a wonderful family man. Together with Rita they had four children and were successful business owners in the local community. Most notably they owned and operated Painter’s Beauty College which was started in 1956 and assisted many to their own success for decades. They also owned and operated Hyland House Carpet and Furniture, Tami’s Apparel, and Rentals & Real Estate managing several commercial and residential properties. Clarence valued education and improving himself and his craft. He attended BYU, Weber State, State of Utah, and Superior Beauty College.
He belonged to the Ogden Chamber of Commerce, the Utah, and National Proprietary Colleges, a number of cosmetology associations, and was a member of the Naccas Review Board.
Clarence was a member of The Church of Latter-day Saints serving as a high priest at the time of his death.
He was an active man exercising daily and often could be found on a roof maintaining their many properties. He spent summers coaching his kids in sports. He loved working in his garden growing beautiful roses and yummy strawberries for his grandchildren to eat. He loved to travel and with his wife they visited Europe, Mexico, Hawaii, and most of the United States. He enjoyed golfing and bowling. He was once president of the Hill Top Bowling Association and a member of The Board of Utah’s Bowling Association.
Most of all Clarence was a family man. He loved his wife and family, especially all of his grandchildren who he told many of his life experiences to. Clarence is survived by his wife, Rita of Roy; sons, Jeffery Hyrum Painter of Huntsville; Doug Clarence Painter of Clearfield; Rodney James Painter of Roy; daughter Tamara P. (Tom) McCowen of West Haven; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Eleanor Painter, and his beloved pets Buffy and Lucky. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Leslie, Jack, William Drew, Virgil, and Darrel; three sisters, Baby Painter, Cleo Simpson, and Belva Vannatter, and great-grandchildren Amina Bantigue and Corbin McCowen.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jeffery Cala and Dr. Yuri Khodakov for their assistance.
