Clayton Lyle Smith

“Chick”

Our much loved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend Clayton Lyle "Chick" Smith died Sunday, June 7, 2015 surrounded by his family.

Chick was born May 30, 1929, the son of Lylas Olsen Smith Brookhart and stepfather Ernie Brookhart in Salt Lake City, Utah.  His family moved to Bountiful in 1944 where he lived for most of his life.

Chick met the love of his life, Jennie Garn in 1949.  Their marriage of nearly 63 years is one that serves as an example of love and devotion to all those who know them.  He is preceded in death by his parents and sister and brother-in- law Catherine (Larry) Evans

In addition to his loving wife, Chick leaves behind his brother and sister-in- law, Morse K. “Mick” (JoAnn) Smith, 4 children, Jordy (Kim) Smith, Julie (Les) Merrill, Jeff (Judy) Smith and Jill (Stephen) Hilton: 10 grandchildren and 9 (almost 10) great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom have benefited from his love and gentle (at times!) guidance.

Chick loved the outdoors, specifically hunting and fishing.  He was an avid golfer and loved to fly model planes.  He and his family spent many happy summers camping and water skiing all over the west.  He also loved music.  He played the harmonica and sang in various groups in his later life.    In retirement, Chick and Jennie split their time between Death Valley, California and Wellton, Arizona (broken only by their return for Thanksgiving through Christmas every year) where they established lifelong friendships with hundreds of other snowbirds.    The memories, stories, music and laughter shared with his children, grandchildren and their spouses will never die.  Thanks Dad, for all of the great times.

As a young man he owned a service station on Main Street in Bountiful which he operated for a number of years before starting a job at Hill Air Force Base as a forklift repairman.  He later transferred to base maintenance.  During this time, he was sent to Vietnam to build facilities for the Air Force during the Vietnam War.  Chick’s work ethic was rewarded through numerous advancements at HAFB.  He retired as Director of Maintenance.

He joined the Utah National Guard in 1948, obtaining the ranks of Master Sergeant, and 1 st Sergeant, (the source of another nickname, “Sarge”).

After leaving HAFB, he and his brother Mickey opened a lawn and garden equipment sales and repair shop, Powered Products. It grew into a wholesale distributorship covering Utah and Idaho.

Chick was one of the original members of the Bountiful City Jeep Posse where he was elected Captain several times and was instrumental in raising the funds to build their first clubhouse.    An active member for over 50 years, at the time of his passing Chick was one of the few honorary lifetime members of the unit.

He lived an extraordinary life full of hard work, fun times and the love of his family and friends.  He will be greatly missed!

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the North Canyon Care Center for their tender care of Chick (and Jennie) during the 9 months that he lived there, especially during his final days, and to the many who have shared love and support to the family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, June, 13, 2015 at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. where friends may visit family Friday, June 12 th from 6-8 pm and Sat 9:30 – 10:30 am prior to services.  Interment Bountiful City Cemetery.
