Clyde Blackett Garrett

FRUIT HEIGHTS a€" Clyde Blackett Garrett, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully Monday, October 1, 2012, at age 81, of pneumonia. His two daughters were at his side, to wish him "Aloha Oe." He is a strong but gentle and tender man, who loves his family, the gospel and his beloved wife Carolyn, who preceded him in death by nearly six years. They are at last together again.

Clyde was born January 11, 1931 in Nephi, UT, the sixth of nine children of Floyd and Norma Blackett Garrett, and grew up there, in the shadow of Mount Nebo. At age 11, he was stricken simultaneously with mumps and a gangrenous ruptured appendix. The doctors wrote him off, but he was blessed with another 70 years of full life.

Clyde was an accomplished basketball player, like his five brothers. He loved gardening and all family activities, especially watching his grandchildren play sports of all kinds, sing, dance and act.

He served in the Army National Guard in Germany during the Korean War. Returning home, he married his sweetheart Carolyn Cook of Fountain Green, UT, in the Manti LDS Temple on February 6, 1953. He loved Carolyn''s family like his own, especially her mother, Euleda Cook.

Clyde earned a Bachelor''s degree in education, and taught 4th and 5th grade for 38 years. One of his pupils grew up to marry his daughter Cathy.

He served faithfully in the LDS Church, as a stake missionary, bishop, stake high councilor, high priest group leader and in several teaching capacities.

As newlyweds, he and Carolyn served an LDS mission in the Hawaiian Islands, where they developed a deep and lifelong love for the Polynesian peoples and cultures. In their later years, they served a mission in Bangkok, Thailand. Through friends there, Vanissa Mitradarmbidhaks came to live with them in Fruit Heights, and they loved Vanissa and her friend Kat like daughters.

Clyde is survived by his brothers Kenneth, Marcus, Verl, Richard and Mike, sister Bonnie, by his two daughters, Cheryl Garber (Gregg) and Cathy Larsen (Bracken), nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom love him dearly. Preceded in death by wife Carolyn and brothers Carl and Jack.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 5, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Brookhaven LDS Chapel, 190 N. Country Lane, Fruit Heights. Friends may visit family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Interment at 3 p.m. in the Fountain Green Cemetery, 1 block East of 400 North and State St., Fountain Green, UT.
