Col. (Ret.) Robert L. West
OGDEN a" Col. (Ret.) Robert Leslie West, 95, died Sunday, January 3, 2010.
He was born November 8, 1914 in Ogden, the son of Leslie C. and Alice Pardoe West. Bob was educated in the Ogden City Schools, graduating from Ogden High.
He married Maurine Shaw, his high school sweetheart, on January 10, 1934 and they were later sealed in the LDS Temple. She died April 28, 1995.
Bob worked his way through college, graduating from the University of Utah with a Degree in Accounting. At the same time he received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant from the U of U ROTC Field Artillery. He worked as an accountant for the State of Utah and the I.R.S. a short time before he was called to active duty at the start of World War II. He was assigned to the initial group that organized Camp Roberts in California. He received promotions to 1st Lt. and Captain before being sent to England, where he trained his men for the D-Day Invasion. He landed on Utah Beach with Gen. Patton''s 3rd Army and served with him in France and Germany and in the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to the United States in 1945 as a full Colonel and was separated from active duty.
He returned to work for the I.R.S., working in Chicago, California, and Utah until he joined his father and brother as a partner at West''s Jewelers.
Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting and especially golfing with 12 of his close friends. He was a member of the Ogden Golf & Country Club, Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs, was chairman of the Armed Forces Committee of the Ogden Chamber of Commerce and served on various other civic committees.
Active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served most recently as finance clerk.
He traveled with Maurine extensively in Europe, Japan, China and other countries.
Surviving are his two sons, Robert Shaw (Nancy) West, Dr. James Leslie (Sue) West, with 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Richard P. West.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 9 at 1 p.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., with Bishop Nate Pierce officiating.
Family and friends may call at the mortuary on Saturday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
