COLIN S. DELAHUNTY
1917 - 2017
Colin Sylvester Delahunty departed this worldly existence, peacefully and of natural causes attendant to advanced age, on January 18, 2017, 13 days following his 100th birthday.
Colin was born on January 5, 1917 in Perth, Western Australia, to Iza Violet O’Sullivan Delahunty and William Sylvester Delahunty. Members of the Delahunty family were early converts to the LDS Church in Western Australia, and Colin came to the United States at the age of 21 to oversee the care and mentoring of his mother and 3 of his siblings who had immigrated to Salt Lake City.
Colin volunteered for the United States Army in 1942 and served as a platoon Sergeant in the 87th Infantry Division of General Patton’s Third Army. He endured the most difficult fighting in the European theater, including at the epicenter of the Battle of the Bulge. A highlight of Colin’s later years was a 2014 trip to Washington, DC, accompanied by his son, to visit the World War II Memorial.
In 1946, Colin married Gwenevere Johnson of Springville, Utah in the Salt Lake Temple. Colin and Gwen were happily married until her death in May of 2011. They had one son, Robert, who together with his wife, Pamela Wirthlin, survive.
A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Colin served his Church in innumerable capacities, including Ward Bishop on 3 occasions, serving two missions with Gwen, and as Senior Patriarch of the Centerville Stake for more than 20 years.
Professionally, Colin excelled as a mortgage banker specializing in commercial lending with the Western Mortgage Loan/United Savings organizations in Ogden and Salt Lake, where he rose to the position of Executive Vice President.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. Bountiful, Utah beginning at 11:00 a.m. Viewings will be held at the same location on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and on Wednesday morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral service.
The family expresses its deep gratitude to the staff and residents of Legacy House of Bountiful, the team at Interim Healthcare of Ogden (especially Colin’s favorite, Julie), and to South Davis Home Care and Hospice, all of whom contributed immensely to Colin’s happiness and quality of life during his later years.
