Cornelious “Neil” VanSweden June 25, 1924 ~ August 21, 2010 OGDEN – Neil VanSweden, 86, passed away Saturday, August 21, 2010 after a long and unforgiving battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born June 25, 1924 in Ogden, Utah to Karl J. and Rena Shilling VanZweden. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1942, followed by service in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the battleship USS South Dakota in the South Pacific Theatre. He married Marjorie “Marge” Barnes, she passed away February 10, 1967. Neil married Grace Redelings Bybee in Carson City, Nevada in 1968. They moved to Fruit Heights, Utah in 1969. He served a distinguished career at Hill Air Force Base where he worked as an Item Manager in the F-16 Division. He spent the remainder of his life doing the things he loved. Neil loved family, especially his wife, stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and had a passion for the outdoors. He was a man of great energy. Neil had a subtle and endearing wit. He was always willing to take in a stray animal and was always making friends no matter where he was located. He was a strong, outgoing, fun-loving, generous and loving person. All who knew him will miss him. Neil is survived by his wife, Grace, two stepchildren, Craig (Deborah) Bybee, Shelly (Ron) Baty, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and his brothers, Lee VanSweden and Robert VanZweden. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Heritage Park Care Center and Inspiration Hospice for their loving care and respect for Neil the last year. Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 28 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. The family will meet friends on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Parkinson’s Research in Neil VanSwedens’ name.
