Coy Nielsen Scharp

Our mom, Coy Nielsen Scharp, passed into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father on July 31, 2012. She was born June 8, 1921, in Hyrum, Utah, the fourth child of Floyd and Carrie Miller Nielsen. She graduated from high school and LDS Seminary at South Cache in Hyrum.

Mom learned the value of hard work at an early age. At the time of her retirement from HAFB with 28 years of civil service, she was an F-16 Airframe Item Manager.

On November 11, 1941, Coy married Melvin Conrad Scharp in Preston, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple on November 11, 1954. They were parents of six children.

Mom was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After a life of service in many callings, she and dad served a two-year mission in Area Andina, Lima, Peru. They then served 18 months in Salt Lake City with lost members records. They also spent endless time at home, transferring hand-scribed genealogical records into data entry.

Mom was especially proud of her pioneer heritage. She was a 50-plus year member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She also helped dad accomplish temple work for hundreds of his family members.

Mom loved sewing, embroidery, and especially crocheting, saying it was her way of relaxing without wasting time. She and dad always grew and bottled a large garden of fruit and vegetables. They always worked side by side at the kitchen sink, they liked it that way.

After more than 64 years of marriage, dad passed away in 2006. We now rejoice in their reunion.

Surviving are two sons and three daughters: Roger (Gay) Scharp, David (Darline) Scharp, Carol (Robert) Allinson, Valerie (Art) Colgain, and Vickie (Dale) Carter; one sister Colleen (Art) Checketts; two sisters-in-law, Beulah (Wade) Nielsen and Phyllis (Jay) Nielsen; 28 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Audene (Tom) French, and grandson Robert Lowell Allinson.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 6, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
