PLEASANT VIEW–Cyril Wenceslaus Hanzelka passed away on Friday, April 7 2023 at his home in Pleasant View, Utah. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was born on January 26, 1926, in Chelsea, Iowa, the son of Frank and Mary Ella Sichera Hanzelka.
He joined the U.S. Navy in January 1944 and after completing basic training, was briefly stationed at Clearfield Army Depot, where he met his future wife Shirley Marjorie Arnold. They were married shortly after the war, on October 24, 1945.
During the war he served on the battleship Massachusetts and was involved in the Philippine Operation, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the Japanese Homeland. After his marriage he served in China on board several destroyers. After his service he and Shirley settled in Ogden where he worked for the Defense Property Disposal Office until his retirement in 1978.
After his retirement, the couple lived in Ogden, Garden City, and St. George, eventually returning to Pleasant View.
Cyril enjoyed water skiing and built several boats to engage in the sport. He taught both his sons to water ski. The family enjoyed camping and taking trips to recreation areas. Cyril also enjoyed snow skiing with the boys, snowmobiling with the whole family, and golf. Later in life he was an accomplished leather worker and was always engaged in some project or another.
Cyril is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, James (Carol) Hanzelka, Tracey (Thais). Hanzelka; five grandchildren, Peter, Cheryl, Greg, Kyle, and Erika; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 2 p.m. at the Ben Lomond Cemetery, North Ogden.
