D. Wilson Hales IDAHO FALLS, Idaho - Dean Wilson Hales died Friday, January 2, 2009 at the Idaho Falls Health and Rehabilitation Center in Idaho Falls. Wilson was born in Rexburg, Idaho May 9, 1920 to Wayne Brockbank and Belle Wilson Hales. He grew up in Ogden and Provo Utah. He married Anne Danvers on June 24, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple. Wilson graduated from Brigham Young University in 1941 and from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1945 with his M.D. degree. He also completed a Masters of Science degree from Loma Linda University. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Medical Officer in the Pacific area as well as the Oakland Naval Hospital. After his service in the navy he returned to Los Angeles for specialty training in Otolaryngology. He was certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology in 1952. Wilson maintained an active practice in Otolaryngology at the Ogden Clinic from 1952-1996. He was active on the McKay-Dee and St. Benedict Hospital medical staffs, serving as the Chief of Staff of St. Benedicts in 1969. He was a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Surgery (Otolaryngology) at the University of Utah Medical School. He has been an active member of many professional organizations. During his professional career, he pioneered microsurgery of the ear in Ogden and had been involved with many innovative head and neck surgery procedures. Wilson was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has had some type of church calling all his adult life. He was a member of the Brigham Young University Alumni Board from 1976-1979 and was honored with a BYU Emeriti Alumni award in 2008. Wilson had a variety of interests and hobbies including antique automobiles, gems and minerals, stamp collecting, computers (buying his first one in 1986) and western and church history. He is a Life Member of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers and was President of the Ogden Pioneer Chapter in 1997 (and hosted the National Encampment) and assistant area Vice President (1994-2004). He and Anne received the Outstanding Couple award at the National SUP Convention in 1998. Wilson has been involved with many local organizations and has donated many of his books and magazine collections to local libraries. Wilson is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anne Danvers; two sons and one daughter: Stephen Wilson Hales (Nancy) New Orleans, LA; John Richard Hales (Connie) Fresno, CA; and Mary Anne Hales Reynolds (Bruce) Idaho Falls, ID. His oldest son, Robert Danvers Hales, died in August 1990. He is also survived by nine grandsons, one granddaughter, twelve great-grandchildren and one sister, Isabel Hales Cannon (George I.) Salt Lake City. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Vern, Richard, and Robert and one sister: Margaret Hales Bown. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Family and friends may call at the mortuary on Friday, January 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will be at the Ogden City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made the Wayne B. Hales Physics and Astronomy Scholarship or the Belle Wilson Hales Endowed Memorial Scholarship through the Brigham Young University.
