Dale Pershing Redd

Dale Pershing Redd 1918 – 2009 OGDEN - Our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, Dale Pershing Redd passed away quietly Monday, July 27, 2009 at his home in Ogden, Utah after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dale was born April 24, 1918 in Blanding, Utah to Parley and Ruth Hurst Redd. He was born in the home of his parents and was always proud that he was delivered by a mid-wife for a princely fee of one dollar. Along with seven brothers and sisters, Dale was raised in Blanding and graduated from San Juan High School. As a young boy, and later as a teenager, Dale worked alongside his father and brothers in the family store, The Parley Redd Mercantile. While working in the store, Dale learned the Navajo language and never missed an opportunity to speak it throughout his life. Dale later attended and graduated from Utah State University in Logan. At Utah State, Dale met and courted Maurine Jensen of Bear River City. In the wake of the Pearl Harbor attacks, Dale and Maurine married in Aztec, New Mexico on December 30, 1941. The following month, Dale was drafted into the United States Army as a private and served until 1946 when he was discharged from the Army Corps of Engineers as a First Lieutenant. Reuniting with Maurine after World War II, they moved to Ogden where they built their home and remained there until today. Dale was employed by Hinckley’s Inc. for 31 years until he retired as the manager and vice-president of Hinckley Trucks in Salt Lake City. He loved living in Ogden and commuted daily to Salt Lake City his entire career. After retirement, Dale spent some time in land development and sales in Box Elder and Davis counties. Dale was extremely proud of his pioneer heritage and was an authority on the settling of San Juan County and surrounding areas. At the time of his death, Dale was the oldest living great-grandson of Lemuel H. Redd Sr. who was one of three scouts for the famous Hole-in-the-Rock pioneers who made their way from the Colorado River over near impassable and unmapped terrain from Parowan to Bluff on the San Juan River. Dale was always willing to share his knowledge of the history and lore of southeast Utah. Dale was a golf enthusiast and a lifelong member of the Ogden Golf and Country Club. He also could claim three holes-in-one in his golf career. In addition, Dale was an avid duck hunter and fisherman. While living in Ogden, Dale and Maurine enjoyed a rich and complete life that included countless friends. Dale is survived by his wife Maurine – a true and faithful companion of nearly 68 years. He is also survived by his sister Jacqueline Redd Wilson of Salt Lake City; sister-in-law Margaret Redd, family friend Marilyn Redd, and by many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. Dale and Maurine’s two sons, Jan Reagan Redd and Eric Jensen Redd preceded him in death. In addition, Dale was preceded in death by his sisters Merene Humphrey and Hazel Redd, and brothers Vincent, Kent, Paul and Gordon. The family wishes to thank all the neighbors who helped the Redds during Dale’s illness, particularly Lynn and Nola Paulson for their unfailing and extremely charitable help and support. Funeral services for Dale will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may call at the mortuary on Monday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Interment, Bear River City Cemetery.
