July 20, 1944 — January 31, 2025

Hooper

Dale Reuben Spangenthal was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in July 1944 to Anita Wolff Spangenthal and Helmut Spangenthal. As a child, he was a member of his synagogue’s boys’ choir, an experience that fostered his early love for community and tradition.

After graduating from Williamsport High School, Dale enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at the age of 17. He proudly served as an aircraft mechanic, specializing in F-4s, T-38s, T-39s, and F-16s throughout his distinguished military career.

While stationed in Omaha, Nebraska, Dale met the love of his life, Phyllis VanWinkle, on the dance floor. Their whirlwind romance continued through long-distance letters while he was deployed as a flight mechanic in Thailand. In a uniquely romantic gesture, Dale proposed by sending Phyllis an engagement ring in a coffee can from overseas. They married in 1968 at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska, and spent 57 wonderful years together.

Their journey as a military family took them across the globe. In Texas, they welcomed their first son, William. In Germany, their daughter, Michele, and son, David, were born. A few years in Richmond, Virginia, followed before they settled in Utah, where their youngest daughter, Julie, completed their family.

Dale dedicated 43 years of service to the U.S. Air Force, both as enlisted personnel and later as a civilian. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1981 but continued working at Hill Air Force Base until his second retirement. Even then, he remained committed to his community, serving as a volunteer at the Hill Air Force Base Pharmacy for over 10 years.

A devoted husband and father, Dale rarely missed his family’s sporting events, concerts, dance competitions, or plays. He found immense joy in coaching his children’s soccer teams and volunteering with AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization). He was elected Commissioner of Section 9 and was honored with the John Ouellette Award for his outstanding service and dedication to youth soccer. He also coached recreational basketball. Dale strongly believed in making sports accessible for all, fostering skill development, teamwork, and fun.

Dale rose to fame as a soccer referee. He dedicated decades to reffing and would be seen on fields of young players to high school. He didn't take a lot of backtalk and wasn't afraid to give a yellow card or two.

His community involvement extended beyond sports. As a member of the Clearfield Recreation Board, he played a key role in organizing events such as the annual Easter egg hunt and the 4th of July 5K.

Dale’s greatest pride and joy were his family. He was a devoted husband to Phyllis, always ensuring she was cared for. He was a proud grandfather who celebrated every achievement of his eleven grandchildren, supporting them in every way possible.

Dale is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Phyllis VanWinkle Spangenthal; his children, William Spangenthal and his wife, Alisa Roddy Spangenthal, of Texas; Michele Spangenthal Ware and her husband, Scott Ware, of Utah; David Spangenthal and his husband, Timothy John Differt, of New Jersey; and Julie Spangenthal Mills and her husband, Brad Mills, of New Hampshire. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Emma Spangenthal, Cody Spangenthal, Hudson Spangenthal, Courtney Ware, Tyler Ware, Maggie Ware, Lanah Differt, Blake Differt, Delilah Mills, Sawyer Mills, and Daphne Mills. He is also survived by his sister, Karen Spangenthal Keonig, and his brother, Rubin Spangenthal.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Anita and Helmut Spangenthal; his sister, Sonia Spangenthal Dorman; and his brother, Charles Spangenthal.

Dale’s legacy is one of love, service, and family. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
