Dana Beth Hansen Surrage
January 5, 1953 - October 4, 2021
Dana Beth Hansen Surrage, our kind and loving mother and grandmother passed away and returned home to our loving Heavenly Father, Monday, October 4, 2021.
Dana was the older of two children born to Dale and Almyra Hansen. She lived her entire life in West Weber, Utah where she learned so many great life lessons and gained the knowledge and love of caring and being around animals and especially horses. She was a very accomplished horseman.
Growing up she participated in Jr. Posse, High School Rodeo and was also a member of the Weber State College Rodeo team. She participated in and won many Rodeo Queen Contests, most notably being crowned Miss Rodeo Ogden in 1972.
On August 9, 1974, she married Ron H. Surrage. They have two children of their own, Shane and Sharidy. The love of animals and especially horses was passed on to their children. During these years, their family would spend thousands of hours together, whether it be in a truck headed to rodeos or just out in the family's arena team roping, running barrels or training horses, but always with good friends and family nearby. Dana's family would also put thousands of miles on their truck hauling the family's award winning Clydesdale's to parades, state and county fairs for horse shows, weddings and even funerals. Dana always had the Clydesdale's tails and manes braided with ribbons and beautiful bows. She took great pride in how the horses looked and was always complimented on their appearance. Ron and Dana were also heavily involved in horse racing, both flat track and chariot racing, being very successful in both for many, many years. After 45 years of marriage, Ron and Dana decided to go their separate ways and divorced in 2019.
Dana was not afraid to work and was ever ready to give help when needed. Whether it be on the farm, the neighbor down the street or someone she had never met. She always had a willing and helpful attitude.
Dana was blessed with many talents and abilities and loved to use them for others. She had a great talent for sewing, and especially sewing materials used to make horse tack was her specialty. She would spend many sleepless nights sewing and making this tack for customers and friends and always took great pride in her work and always wanted her finished product to look just right. Dana was employed and drove a school bus for Weber County School District for over 20 years, with most of those years driving the special needs children that she loved so much.
Dana's greatest trait was being kind and loving others, and others loved her as well. She loved her family and cherished them. Her children and grandchildren brought her much joy and happiness and she was very proud of them and their accomplishments. She was their biggest fan and loved to support them whether it was at a rodeo, baseball, football, basketball or track meet, she was at her kid’s games and events.
Unfortunately, the last few years of Dana's life, she was stricken with many health challenges and events that changed life drastically. She was not the same person that most people knew and loved. Though her body had finally given up, we knew that she still loved us and was proud of the kids she raised and also her grandchildren.
We were blessed to have her as a mother, for the countless times she was there for us and the many lessons we learned from her.
Dana is survived by her son, Shane (Karrie) Surrage , Marriott-Slaterville; daughter, Sharidy (Nate) Phillips, West Weber; seven grandchildren, Shaylynn Isaacs, Whitley, Peyton, Olivia, Taysley, Teagan Surrage, Teyanna Phillips, and one step-grandson; Gabe Phillips. She is also survived by her brother, Scott (Nessa) Hansen, West Weber. Dana was preceded in death by her parents, Dale N. and Almyra D. Hansen, and a granddaughter, Traeya Phillips.
