Daniel Arnold Schmidt

September 5, 1949 ~ June 1, 2019

Dan, our Husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, resident of North Ogden, Utah, and member of the Coldwater Stake 23rd Ward, was called back home on June 1, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Dan is the son of Arnold Erwin and Virginia Marie (Bates) Schmidt. He was born on September 5, 1949 in Oakland, Burt County, Nebraska.

Dad started life on his grandfather’s farm where his father worked 136-acres. The farm was located in the Park Community, 72 miles north of Lincoln and 45 miles west of Omaha, Nebraska. There, with two older sisters and a younger brother, they lived until 1957 when the family moved west, headed for California, but ran out of gas and money and ended up settling in Murray, Utah. While there, two more sisters were added to the family.

Dad is a graduate of Murray High School “Class of 1967”. He served in the US Army from March 1969 until February 1, 1972, when he was honorably discharged and settled back in Murray.

Shortly after being discharged from the army he met the love of his life, Tonya LaVar Anderson. He says it was truly love at first sight. Dad always said when he saw our mother for the first time he fell for her and knew she would be forever at his side. They were married eight months after their first date on December 1, 1972 and later sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mom and Dad were politically conservative, constantly together as best friends should be and eternally strong; both in their faith and because of and for their family. Dad wasn’t a loud person about his faith, but we knew by the life he lived and the example he set that he had a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that never faltered. Even in his last days he would only express how grateful he was for the miracle of life and how amazing a life he was blessed with. Dad was grateful for the family he is a part of.

Dad’s life of service in the Church was extensive. His last calling was in the North Ogden 23rd Ward Sunday School Presidency. It was something that he loved and was sad to be released from. He also often joined and enjoyed the Ward Choir.

His formal education began at Salt Lake Community College and later Mesa Community College in Mesa, Az. As a lifelong learner, he attended ‘YouTube University’. He retired from the Aerospace Industry. He was a Supply Chain Raw Materials Planner for most of his career, working on many projects, the last being the NATO F35 Military aircraft.

Dad was a good gardener. He loved sharing his fresh vegetables with neighbors and friends. He would surprise Mom with fresh flowers and they enjoyed canning together. Dad was also a big DIY kind of guy and took care of things. He designed and built their homes and helped his children with all their building projects. His help was extended to friends and neighbors. He was affectionately known as “Neighbor Dan!”. He always said there are two kinds of people in the world, those who “can do” and those who can’t and have to pay someone who can. He was the “can do” kind of guy.

Surviving family to carry forward: His beloved wife and partner, Tonya LaVar Schmidt, their children, James (Koty) Schmidt, South Jordan, Utah; Bret (Lori) Schmidt, Syracuse, Utah; Amanda (Travis) Lamph, Clearfield, Utah; and Neal (Cali) Schmidt, Roy, Utah. There are also 12 of the most amazing grandchildren anyone could ever possibly hope to have, Fred, Samantha, Samuel, Naomi, Lucas, Joey, Nate, Isaac, Holden, Payton, Gabriel, and Adalyn.

Dad is the first of his siblings to pass through the veil, survived by Dixie Lynn (Richard) Stewart, West Jordan, Utah; Patricia Ann “Pat” (Robert) Key, Beaver Dam, Arizona; Michael Dean “Mike” (Janice) Schmidt, Meridian, Idaho; Robynn Lee (Dave) Kenney, Murray, Utah; and Lorine Dee “Lori” Johnson, West Jordan, Utah..
