Darrel Payne

August 27, 1934 — January 8, 2023

Syracuse

Darrel was welcomed into the world by Leland and Maxine Payne in Hollywood, California. He was raised in El Monte, California where he was involved in with the church and as a teenager, began working for the Crippled Children Society (now named Ability First) where he worked for 27 years…culminating in a position as clinic director for the Pasadena clinic engaged in therapy, employment, recreation, and the education of disabled persons. He loved this job and the people he worked with, but he left it to start a new career to support his family. He spent the next 20 years as a very accomplished commercial swimming pool builder for California Commercial Pools…a job he also loved. Throughout his life, Darrel served in various positions of leadership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Darrel married his childhood sweetheart and love of his life, Marlene Alcorn, shortly after he returned from his three-year mission serving amongst the Navajo Nation. Darrel and Marlene raised and very much loved their six children.

His daughter, Jeannette; and his wife, Marlene, both preceded him in death in 2009; and his brother, Richard Payne (Claudia) in 2019; and his grandson, Travis Payne in 1996. He died firm in his faith and is now reunited with them and many loved ones. Darrel passed away quietly surrounded by some of his children and grandchildren under the care of his daughter, Becky, in her home in Syracuse, Utah. He is survived by his sister, Rilla Morgan (Ron); his brother, Marvin Payne (Lori); his children, Victoria Cammans (Stephen), Vernon Payne (Valerie), Steven Payne (Silvia), Kent Payne (Carla), Rebecca Hyer (Erik); his son-in-law, Fred Hackman; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He will be fondly remembered for his infectious smile, penchant for bad jokes, passion for serving others, mountain of patience and faith, and love of dancing with mom. He leaves us with a legacy of faith and love. Till we meet again.

The Payne family would like to thank Community Nursing Services for their tender care of our dad, and California Commercial Pools for their continued love and financial support of Darrel.
