Darrel Westwood

Darrel Westwood passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, April 24, 2011 at home, in the company of his family, following a short illness.

He was born January 17, 1925 in Price, Utah to Ray and Lovine Nichols Westwood. During the depression the family moved to California and returned to Utah in 1940. Darrel attended schools in Hayward, California and Ogden, Utah, concluding with studies at Weber College.

Darrel served his country in World War II serving in the 423rd bomb squadron, 306th bomb group based in Thurleigh, England. He flew many combat missions over occupied Europe. He spent an additional year traveling throughout Europe as part of the Casey Jones aerial mapping project. His experiences in Europe increased his love of peace and of our country.

On September 24, 1948, Darrel married his partner and best friend, Marilyn McFarland. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on December 12, 1962. They have enjoyed many happy years together.

He worked as an aircraft mechanic and quality inspector at Hill Air Force Base for 35 years, retiring in 1977. He car pooled with a great group of friends for most of his career.

Darrel was a High Priest in the LDS church and served in many callings throughout his life. He loved the Lord and believed strongly in the Gospel.

He had a great sense of humor and loved to tease his children and grandchildren.

Darrel lived a long, full and happy life and enjoyed the company of family and great friends throughout.

He followed his lifelong dream and purchased a farm in Kanesville in 1954 and began raising cattle. Darrel continued working on his farm until just weeks before his passing. He raised a beautiful and productive garden last summer.

Darrel loved the outdoors and spent as much time as he could in the mountains with family and friends. In the last few years, he could be found most summer Sundays enjoying the shade and fresh air at his property at Beaver Creek.

For many years Darrel has enjoyed the company of a group of close friends at Bear Lake, Lake Powell, horse riding in the Uinta Mountains and on trips and at parties.

Darrel was loved and will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
