Darrell Lee Meibos

1947-2018

Darrell was born February 22, 1947, in Ogden UT and passed away unexpectedly on May 22, 2018, in Tooele County UT. He was the fourth child of John Henry Jr. and Zelma Hodson Meibos. Darrell was raised on a small farm in West Layton, UT learning farming skills and hard work. He loved working with his brother Dee and his father putting in many long days. He loved hanging out at Staley’s Market with his friends and the farmers in West Layton listening to all their stories.

He attended Layton Elementary, Central Davis Jr High, and Davis High School, class of 1965. He continued his education at the Utah Technical College in Salt Lake City, completing the requirements in Diesel Mechanics, May 1967. Darrell began his career and life long job at Wheeler Machinery on March 27, 1967, and continued to work for Wheelers for 39 years and 7 months to the day retiring October 27, 2006. Darrell loved his job and spent many hours teaching the younger guys who said they were going to “Meibos Tech.” He also loved testing the engines on the Dino. Darrell never stopped learning and educating himself in many avenues.

Darrell married Terry Tutorow on September 5, 1969, in the Salt Lake City Temple. They were blessed with 5 children, Marshelle, Shalice, Heather, Jeffrey, and Kamber. He loved teaching them about real life and spent many hours enjoying family vacations and camping trips. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, card games, croquet, and other games with his family. He loved scouting as a boy. He spent many years in the scouting program teaching scouts the skills needed to complete merit badges. He spent weeks at scout camps and many weekends on campouts. He loved spending time with the boys as he watched them grow. He taught them to appreciate nature and how to be successful in life. Many of these boys went on to become Eagle Scouts and serve missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Darrell and Terry served a church service mission focusing on taking care of missionary apartments. They were especially well suited for this calling as a result of their years of experience managing their own rentals.

Later in his life he became involved in emergency preparedness and C.E.R.T. training and completed the Train the Trainer in the Community Response Team.  He was trained in Amateur Ham Radio Service and spent many occasions helping at the Layton City Parade, fireworks, and other community functions.

He is a grandpa (grand pappy) to 19 grandchildren whom he gave advice to whenever he could, and to anyone else who he felt would benefit from his words of wisdom.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Zelma Meibos, his brothers Jack and Dee, sister Jean, mother- in- law Fay and other brothers and sisters-in-law.

He will be missed by all of those left behind, wife Terry, children Robin Marshelle Waters (Paul), Shalice Brady (Scott), Heather Truex (Les), Jeffrey Darrell Meibos (Melissa), and Kamber Dent (Joseph), 19 grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., at the Sand Springs LDS church located at 3161 W. (3200 W.) 150 N., Layton UT. Family and friends may visit with the family Monday from 6-8 p.m., at the Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary located at 1867 N. Fairfield Rd, as well as 12:30-1:30 p.m., at the Sand Springs LDS church. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park – Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Rd.

We’d like to thank the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office, Dugway and Terra Search and Rescue teams, and police officers who took great care in helping Terry and in the recovery of Darrell’s body. We are very grateful for the gentleman who stopped to help Terry when she was seeking assistance. Their kind and generous acts of service will never be forgotten. We appreciate all those who have reached out and offered their services to ease our burdens during this difficult time. They are proof that there truly are angels among us.
