Darrell Wilmot Smith
LAYTON a" Darrell Wilmot Smith, 84, passed away September 3, 2008 at Davis Hospital and Medical Center, Layton, Utah. Darrell was born June 11, 1924 in Richmond, Cache, Utah. A son of William Frederick Smith Jr. and Mary Meta Katrine Jacobsen. He married Clella Ruth Drollinger, December 19, 1947 in the Logan Utah LDS Temple.
He attended 1st thru 8th grade at Park School in Richmond, Utah, graduated after 4 years at North Cache High School; and from the LDS seminary. He served 4 years in the United States Air Force during World War II, one of those years was in the Army of Occupation in Europe. He was able to see his grandmother in Denmark while he was there. He spent 4 quarters at Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah after he returned home in 1946.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities; ward and stake clerk, MIA, Bishop of Layton 11th Ward and as a High Councilman. For many years he took equipment and supplies to the Uintah mountains for girl''s camp at Lake Lyman for Layton Utah Stake. He retired in 1980 after 33 years at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah. He worked as a mechanic for some years on the east side of the Salt Lake Airport before it became an International airport.
He and his wife, Ruth, began serving in the LDS Name Extraction Program in 1982. They continued this thru their 2 LDS Missions in Family History in the Texas Houston Mission 1991a" 1993, and in the Georgia Atlanta Mission 1995a"1996. They continued extracting when they moved to Perry, Utah 1997-2002.
He loved working with wood and built children''s furniture, toys and a few of his daughter''s kitchens, and countless projects to help and assist others. For many years there was always a project going on.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, one son and five daughters, Linda (Rulon) Terry; Kent (Susan) Smith; Debra (David) Shields and Kathi Fletcher all Layton, Utah; April (Thomas) Harrison, Castle Dale, Utah; and Julie (Brent) Justensen, Syracuse, Utah, 33 grandchildren and 55 great- grandchildren, one sister, Merleen Orvin, Caldwell, Idaho; sister-in-law, Jean Smith, SLC, Utah and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Vernon, brother-in-law, Noel Orvin, and a step-grandson, Jeffrey Rasmussen.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 6, 2008 at 9 a.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road, with Bishop Jeffrey England of the Evans Meadows Ward, conducting. Friends and family may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
Interment, Richmond, Utah City Cemetery approximately at 11:30 to 12:00 p.m.
