He graduated from Sun Prairie High and attended the University of Wisconsin. He also spent time in the US Army being stationed in Japan and Germany post-World War II.  Once his service commitment concluded he began a life of public service; first as a bus driver for Madison Transit and then as a tax auditor for the state of Wisconsin. His next positions were in hospital administration first at Southern Wisconsin Center as the chief finance officer and then the Child/Adolescent Treatment Center as the Administrator. In 1968 he capped his service to the State of Wisconsin as the Secretary of the Department of Regulation and Licensing for Governor Knowles.

In 1970 he followed his heart and moved to Utah. He started in Bountiful before settling in Ogden. During this period he maintained a life of public service working in the Financial Aid Departments at the University of Utah and Weber State University. He finished as the comptroller at Weber State University. Not being one to retire so easily, he then went back to tax auditing first for the IRS in Ogden and then he finished with the State of Utah. After his retirement he completed a two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the inner city areas of Ogden, Utah.
