David Ersel Platt

1939-2021

On Tuesday, April 20th, 2021, David Ersel Platt, while holding the hand of his beloved wife of sixty-one years, lost the battle he had fought against COVID-19. He passed away at the age of 81, three days before his 82nd birthday. Our hearts are broken as we say goodbye to our husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, sibling, uncle, cousin, friend, mentor, spiritual guide and scout leader.

David was born on April 23rd, 1939 in Salt Lake City, Utah and had many happy childhood memories of his life on Denver Street. The family later moved to Ogden, Utah. David graduated from Ogden High School and studied at Weber University. He served briefly in the U.S. Army and later worked as a butcher, a salesman, a business owner, an entrepreneur and the creator of a scout inspired vampire game.

David married the love of his life, Elaine Romer Platt in 1960 and was later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on November 1st, 1967. They were the ultimate team and comedy duo. Together they raised ten children. David loved his family deeply. David was a storyteller who often laughed the hardest at his own stories and jokes.  David was also an artist. Always inspired by his muse, Elaine, he had the ability to see how demolished fences and discarded lumber could be transformed into a gristmill with a waterwheel, a bunkhouse, patios and other creations. David was a man of faith and an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he served in the Bishopric, as a teacher and as a scoutmaster. He loved the youth, and using his pocket knife as a metaphor, he constantly sought to help them to be prepared.

David was preceded in death by his parents Erma and Ersel Platt. He is survived by his wife Elaine Romer Platt, children, Jody Child, Chris Platt, Cory Platt, Jason Platt, Jonathan Platt, Carlos Platt, Edison Platt, Rosi Platt, Maria Platt, Maura Platt; his sister Janette Trottier (Robert) and brother Stephen Platt (Rose), as well as twenty grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
