David Ben Thompson
David Ben Thompson, 93, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2012 due to complications from a stroke. Born May 13, 1919 in Salt Lake City, Utah, he was preceded in death by his parents, Ben Walker Thompson and Hazel Adeline Jones, and two sisters, Shirley and Ruth. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Maxine Read Thompson, many close friends, and a large extended family who will miss him dearly.
Dave was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and fulfilled every calling he was given with diligence and devotion. He and his sweetheart, Maxine, served three missions for their church in Nauvoo, Illinois, Anaheim, California, and Israel. They also faithfully served four additional volunteer assignments in the mission field: two in Vancouver, Canada and two in Hartford, Connecticut.
For thirty years, Dave travelled from his home in Elko, Nevada to Salt Lake City to serve as an usher at the General Authorities entrance of the Salt Lake Tabernacle for the semi-annual LDS General Conference.
Dave also devoted his time and energy to his community and country. He was an active member of the Lion''s Club, maintaining a 100 percent attendance record for over three decades. In addition, he served in the Army Air Corps during World War II before being called home by the Red Cross on a medical discharge to care for his invalid mother.
Dave showed the same commitment to his professional endeavors as he did in every other aspect of his life. He had a long career as a travelling salesman for Strevell Patterson Hardware and held a principle broker''s license as an estate planner. He also managed parking lots, was involved in property development, and organized the Utah Bank and Trust company.
Dave always had a project. He and Maxine loved to travel and were able to see much of the world together. He was a certified private pilot and a motorhome enthusiast. In addition, Dave was an accomplished musician and athlete. He played bass in a band and was a competitor on Utah State University''s swim team. In later years, however, Dave became a self-proclaimed, "Born-again Cougar," supporting Brigham Young University athletics.
All who knew him will remember Dave as a generous, kind-hearted, and optimistic man, whose relentless spirit of service was second only to his passion for his sweetie, Maxine.
