DAVID J. WAGNER
JANUARY 18, 1947 – MAY 18, 2021
David John Wagner, 74, formerly of Utah, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at Mary Greely Medical Center in Ames, IA.
Dave was born January 18, 1947 to Kathryn and Kenneth O. Wagner Sr in Fairmont, Minnesota. After graduating from Owatonna High School, Dave joined the United States Air Force. In 1968 he was united in marriage to Mary Lillian Johnson of Deering, ND. The couple raised their family on numerous Air Force bases but called North Dakota and then Utah their home.
He was a career service member and a proud Vietnam veteran. One highlight of Dave’s military career was a TDY to Norway for a NATO exercise where he was able to meet family members and re-establish contact with family he had not seen for many years. After serving in the Air Force in fighter aircraft avionics, Dave retired in 1986 with an honorable discharge as a Senior Master Sergeant. In April 2016 Dave had the privilege of being a participant in the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to honoring those who, like him, have served and sacrificed for our country. Dave was smart in his ability to troubleshoot and repair aircraft and anything else mechanical. Dave also worked at All American Gourmet in Clearfield, UT, Nestle Purina in Ft Dodge, IA, and retired from Hill AFB, UT as a Production Planner.
In 2003 Dave’s wife of 35 years, Mary, passed away. Dave was united in marriage to Cindy Craig on May 28, 2005 in Fort Dodge, IA where the couple eventually made their home in 2011. Working with Cindy on that home was a particularly special project for him.
Dave was a jack of all trades and a master of all. There was not anything he couldn’t fix. He enjoyed woodworking, mechanics, writing, gardening, and antiquing with Cindy. Of all the titles he received through his accomplishments in his lifetime, his title as “Grandpa” was one he cherished until the very end. He attended programs, sporting events and family functions with camera in hand to proudly capture all his kids and grandkids. He will be greatly missed.
Dave is survived by his wife, Cindy; children, Dawn (Steve) Scholtec, David Jr., Georgia (Tory) Judd, Kenny (April Summers), Kelly Craig, Mallory Boge, Ryan Craig; twenty-one grandchildren, Amanda (Wade), Chantel (Cole), Jeff (April), Parker, Gracie, Steven, Matthew, Brandon, Dakota, Gage, Cash, Kauter, Daryn, Josh, Trae, James, Johnny, Alexia, Mae, Jackson, and Carter; ten great-grandchildren, Colt, Caysen, Cohen, Aizik, Avery, Kyren, Beatrice, Brennon, Beckett, and Lilah; siblings, Ken Wagner Jr., Janey (Gene) Smith; and step-father Waldo Dohman.
Dave is preceded in death by his wife Mary Wagner; parents Kathryn Dohman, Kenneth O. Wagner Sr.; and brother Richard Wagner.
