Dean C. "Bud" Bateman

July 16, 1927 — February 1, 2025

Dean C “Bud” Bateman, 97, passed away peacefully at home in Sandy, Utah, on February 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He lived a life filled with love, service, and devotion to those he held dear.

Dean was born in Logan, Utah, to Pearl (Ashton) and Leo Bateman and was raised in Richmond, Utah. He later moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where he met Hazel Humphrey, the mother of his four children. Together, they settled in Roy, Utah, where they raised their children, Terry, Rex, Clifford, and Barbara. Though Dean and Hazel’s marriage ended in 1976, Dean later found companionship with his beloved life partner, Joyce Swa, with whom he shared many happy years.

Dean dedicated much of his life to serving his country. At just 16 years old he enlisted in the US Navy in November of 1943 as a US Navy Corpsman serving alongside the U.S. Marines. He was a medic on Iwo Jima and in Okinawa, Japan. Dean was serving on the USS Hinsdale and survived the April 1, 1945, kamikaze attack, from which dozens perished. After being honorably discharged from the US Navy in January 1946, he later enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951. Dean served in Korea until 1952 and was later discharged from the USAF in 1955. He and his four brothers, while serving in the military, would send money home to their mother to help support the family. Throughout his military career, he was stationed at various locations, including Nellis AFB Las Vegas, Nevada, Hamilton AFB Novato, CA, and F.E. Warren AFB Cheyenne, WY. Dean served proudly in WWII with the U.S. Navy as well as in the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force. Upon Dean’s discharge from the military, he went on to become an avionics mechanic at Hill AFB in Ogden, UT, where he worked until his retirement in 1982.

Dean is survived by his children, Terry Bateman of Sandy, UT, Clifford Bateman of Sandy, UT, and Barbara (Matthew) White of Sisters, OR; his brother, Richard “Dick” (Elaine) Bateman of Twin Falls, ID; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his life partner, Joyce; his son, Rex Lee Bateman; and siblings, Rex Leo, George “Arlo”, Elaine Miller, Jean “Sis” Monforton, Dennis “Denny”, Robert “Bobby”, Bonnie Sorenson, and LaRee Bertoch.

Though he was proud of his service, Dean found the greatest joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved camping, fishing, road trips, and listening to classic country music. A devoted sports fan, he never missed a good football or baseball game and enjoyed losing himself in a great mystery novel. Most of all, he cherished every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, always offering his wisdom and sense of humor.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., where friends and family are invited to share stories and times spent with Dean, and on Saturday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Following services, family and friends are invited to gather for a meal and celebration of Dean’s life at Richmond Park Community Center, 6 West Main Street, Richmond, Utah.

Dean will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his kindness and strength and he will be cherished by the lives he touched.
