OGDEN a€" Dean Wilson Packard passed away peacefully Friday morning, November 20, 2009 at his home after a year-long battle with leukemia.

He was born July 18, 1929 in Springville, Utah, one of three children and the only son of Lucille Wilson and Chillian Max Packard. After graduating as the Student Body President from Springville High School in 1947, he attended B.Y.U. and later served an LDS Mission in Western, Canada. After returning, he graduated from the University of Utah in 1954 and went on to receive his M.D. at the University of Utah Medical School. While attending the University of Utah he was a member of the Phi Rho Sigma Medical Fraternity.

He began his internship at the Thomas Dee Memorial Hospital in Ogden. His general surgery residency was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He also served with the U.S. Air Force as a Captain for two years performing general surgery. He returned to American Fork in general practice. Later, he attended the University of California at San Francisco specializing in Urology. In 1968, he moved his practice to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah. He held many academic and hospital positions. He served as the President of the Utah Urological Society from 1970-1973 and Medical Director of the Ogden Dialysis Center from 1975-1980. He retired in 2003.

Dean married Melba Child in 1952. They were the parents of six children. They later divorced. He married Stella Carlsen in 1973. They have been married 36 years and have traveled extensively throughout the world. They cherished good times and memories with friends and family.

His interests included golfing, gardening, hunting, traveling, reading, painting, and enjoyed spending time with his family especially during the holidays.

Surviving are his loving wife, Stella Packard, and his children, Diane (Dan) Glover, Paul (Karen) Packard, Marilyn (Jon) Beckstead, Tom (Richelle) Packard, Karen (Joe) Alexander and his stepson, Glen (Angela) Carlsen. He has 16 grandchildren as well as two sisters, Maxine Davies and Renee Taylor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Jimmy, a stepson Kent Carlsen and stepdaughter Cheri Carlsen Alvey.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 25 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.

Friends may visit at the mortuary on Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.

Interment, Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.

The family expresses special thanks to Dr. Vincent Hansen, Dr. Paul J. Shami and Hearts for Hospice for their kind support and loving care of our Dad. We couldn''t have asked for more.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Research Foundation at 500 Huntsman Way, SLC, UT 84108.
