Delbert J. "Bus" Bingham
OGDEN a" Delbert John "Bus" Bingham, 95, died Monday, May 10, 2010 at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home.
He was born to Adelbert W. Bingham and Hannah Rhodelpha Knight on February 7, 1915, in Ogden, Utah. When his mother passed away during the 1918 flu epidemic, a humble Grandma, Hannah Bingham, cared for him for two and a half years until his father married Mary Pearl Burton, a perfect new mother.
He attended local schools in Ogden, West Ogden and Marriott. Delbert graduated from Weber High School, Weber State Jr. College and Utah State University, where he was a member of Sigma Chi and earned a B.S. degree in physical education. He played basketball as a forward on championship teams a" three times All Conference a" and Conference high scorer during the 1939 NCAA Tournament while at Utah State.
Delbert served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a glider pilot during World War II. He spent 30 months overseas in the North African and European Theaters. "Bus" received the Air Medal for his mission in "Market Garden".
On August 6, 1945, he married Inez Taylor Winkler. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple. He and Inez had 54 love-filled years together.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Highland Ward and served in many leadership positions.
Upon completing his military service, he decided to go into business for himself as a food distributor.
Surviving are four daughters, Kay W. Stephensen, Oakdale, CA; Delpha (Mike) Arbon, Washington Terrace; Sharon Kidman, Roy; Joan (Bill) Coombs, North Ogden; 21 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, L.G. (Mary Ann) Bingham, Maridene (David E.) Wilson, and Darlene (Charles) Rainey.
Delbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Inez; daughter, Marian; and brothers, Delos and Robert.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 14 at 2 p.m. at the Highland LDS Ward Chapel, 1314 a" 27th Street, with Bishop Gregg Pickett officiating.
A visitation will be held at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday at the Ward Chapel from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.
Interment, Ogden City Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded.
