Delbert LaVon Boyington

“Big D” - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Delbert LaVon Boyington, passed away on March 29, 2017 at the age of 84. He was born on August 9, 1932 to Hazel Emerette (Tuttle) and Clinton Thomas Boyington. He married Vivien Joyce Dean on February 2, 1952 and together they had nine children.

Delbert graduated from Manti High School and attended Snow College and Weber State College.

He was drafted into the United States Army in 1952. He spent his Army career in Korea, obtaining the rank of E5 Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and received the Korea Presidents Peace Award Medal for his service.

After the Army, Delbert worked at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah for 36 years as a civilian employee. He retired in November, 1990. After HAFB, Delbert worked for Knighton Optical.

Delbert was a man with a big heart, deep voice and made friends wherever he went. He loved providing service to his community. His service included being a Scout Leader, PTA President, Coach in the Baseball Little League program for 15 years, serving with Lions Club International, President of the 5 points Lions Club, Zone Leader and Regional Representative in the State Lions Club.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving faithfully in many callings which included High Priest Group Leader, Executive Secretary, Stake Sunday School President, Home Teacher, and Ogden LDS Temple Ordinance Worker. As a Patient Representative at the VA Nursing Home where Delbert resided for many years he was instrumental in helping to have a Chapel built.

In his younger years, his hobbies included ballroom dancing with his wife, hunting, and fishing. He always had a strong love of music and genealogy.

Delbert is survived by his wife, Vivien; and eight children, Becky (Rich) Shaw-Freeman, Kathy Kelson, Craig Boyington, Jan (Mike) Reney, Kristy (John) Arko, Kent D. (Teresa) Boyington, Lori (Dennis) Wood, and Kirk Boyington. He is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark; granddaughter, Nicole; his parents; five sisters, Erma May Carter, Irene Boswell, Phyllis Stetich, Marilyn Grace Bryan, and Ethel Oakden; and one brother, Thomas Louis Boyington.

The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the Salt Lake and Payson Veterans Nursing Home for their years of dedication and care to Delbert.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 6, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.  Friends may visit with family on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30 to 10;30 a.m. at the mortuary.  Interment, Lindquist Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd. Ogden.

Memorial at Salt Lake VA Nursing Home to be scheduled in upcoming weeks.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Salt Lake Veterans Home.
