Delbert 'Del' Carbiener

M. Delbert Carbiener "Del" 1927-2008 He fought the battle, Finished the race, And kept the faith

Del was born in Bremen, Indiana on June 29, 1927, to Fredrick and Marie Carbiener. The family moved to California when Del was eleven years old. He married Mary V. Ciaverarelli on November 2, 1947. They have two children, Linda Marie and Gregory G. Carbiener.

While Del was in high school, he was hired by Douglas Aircraft to draw blueprints for fifty cents a drawing. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and saw duty in the South Pacific during World War II. On April 1, 1945 aboard the LCI 802, he participated in the invasion of Okinawa. He also fought in the Philippines, Leyte Gulf, Ieshima, and Kamareta island groups in the South Pacific. He was awarded ten medals including the Bronze Star for Valor.

Del was in the aircraft industry for forty years as an aeronautical engineer owning his own manufacturing business for many years. If he was given a challenging project that aircraft engineers said couldn''t be done, he always proved them wrong. As an example, he labored for six months in an effort to manufacture the leading edge of a nacelle in one piece. The nacelle is the outer ring of a jet engine that was always made in four sections. He was successful in this endeavor. The aircraft industry still uses his manufacturing method today. It was first installed in 1959 on the Boeing 720B aircraft. He became a Manufactures Representative at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah from 1972 until his retirement in 1987. His many civic positions included President of the Air Force Association, Salt Lake Chapter in 1969, and Quartermaster of the Bountiful VFW Post 9416 for nine years, member of the LCI National Association, lifetime member of the DAV and a lifetime member of the VFW. He was a member of the St. Olaf Catholic Church for forty years.

Del retired in 1987, where he was able to enjoy his family and his favorite hobby landscaping. He was an honorable man with the highest integrity. He loved his family and especially treasured the sixty years he spent with his loving wife Mary. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were his life.

He is survived by his wife Mary, daughter Linda Marie Nesi (Joseph), son Gregory, sister Marjorie Richardson, brother Devon Carbiener, grandsons, Neal, Matthew and Alan Witbeck, granddaughter Nikole Haslam, great grandchildren, Amanda Witbeck, Dalton and Kole Van Komen, and Grace Ann Witbeck, as well as many nieces and nephew. Del was a friend to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
